Man's View of ?Self? (1) - Expositing Ephesians: The Christian's ...

As?we've?noted before, the word ?saint? is not used in the Bible for some special elite group but refers to every Christian. In light of that, the Apostle Paul says something staggering in Ephesians 3:8: Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints. Here is a man of?unequaled?humility, the very opposite or the ?selfism? of our day. Paul?s view of ?self? was the very opposite of the world?s view, and until Christians realize that and reject the nonsense of today?s ?selfism,? we will never have a pure Church that is committed to service and true ministry. How can any of us ever be servants when we hold to a high ?self-worth,? which is one of the catchwords of our day?

There is within Christianity a philosophy that is working like a cancer. This philosophy is known by many titles and descriptions: self?esteem, self?image, self?worth, self?acceptance, self?awareness, self-improvement, self?help, and, to cut to the heart of the matter, ?secular psychology.? We need to take a moment to show that the basic underlying philosophy of this is, without question, diametrically opposed to Scripture.

Christianity today has become utterly fascinated, captivated, and motivated by the term ?self?esteem.? This term has become a by?word in Christian circles. Sermons and whole seminars are devoted to it and its application; Christian leaders are teaching it as though it were Biblical doctrine. As we?ll see, the terms ?self? and ?pride? are NEVER, not one single time, used in Scripture in a positive way. Never, not in a single instance, are we encouraged to glorify self, to elevate self. May I say it one more time, not even one Scripture warrants this popular teaching.

In spite of that Biblical fact, one of the foremost Christian leaders of our day, who majors on the family, abandons that truth by writing: ?In a real sense, the health of an entire society depends on the ease with which the individual members gain personal acceptance. Thus, whenever the keys to self?esteem are seemingly out of reach for a large percentage of the people, as in twentieth century America, then wide?spread ?mental?illness,? neuroticism, hatred, alcoholism, drug abuse, violence, and social disorder will certainly occur.

In other words, low self?esteem (i.e. thinking lowly of one?s self) is at the root of all the problems of society. But one flaw in this theory is that other psychologists say that the problems in society are caused by other factors. So, this just leaves this man?s statement as one of the many?psychological?theories of the day.

Even more basic and serious is another flaw, namely, that it?s blatantly contrary to Scripture. All the problems he lists come not as a result of low self-esteem, but because of man?s rebellion against God. The ?catalog of sin? in Romans 1:20-32 could not be clearer. As verse 21 declares, ?Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.? Paul later lists sin after sin that results from man?s rebellion.

What then do the Scriptures say about ?self?? In 2 Timothy 3:1?5 we find Paul?s vivid description of the apostate days prior to Jesus? return. The very first thing that Paul says of apostate mankind is that man will be ?LOVERS OF THEIR OWN SELVES.? Man?s natural?inclination?is to love himself, but the attitude that the Word of God says to have for self is to deny it, as does Mark 8:34: ?Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.? God?doesn't?tell us to revel in it or build it up; rather He says to deny it. ?Self? is our greatest problem.

Moreover, the only men God ever used were humble servants. He?didn't?use a ?self?assertive? Moses, but a humble Moses. Uniquely, while God called a self?assertive Peter, He?didn't?use Peter until the Lord Jesus humbled him in John 21.

Zillow Acquires Rental And Real Estate Search Site HotPads For ...

Zillow just announced that it has acquired the San Francisco-based rental and real estate search site HotPads for $16 million in cash. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2012. This acquisition marks the first time that Zillow has acquired a primarily consumer-facing company and Zillow says it is making this acquisition to ?expand the size of its growing rental audience and extend the reach of its marketing tools and productivity solutions for rental professionals.?

HotPads has been around for a while. The company launched in 2005, with a focus on rentals. It expanded to include real estate sales in 2007 and started including vacation rentals and hotels in 2009. The company, which competes with the likes of Trulia, Apartments.com, Craigslist and, of course, Zillow itself, raised $2.3 million in a Series A round led by Meakem Becker Venture Capital in 2007, but hasn?t raised any funding since. The company has 19 employees and will continue to operate from San Francisco and join the Zillow Rental Network once the acquisition has closed.

The basic idea here, as Zillow CEO Spencer Rascoff told me earlier today, is to create one single database for rentals that will be available on Zillow, HotPads and the company?s other properties. HotPads, he stressed, will continue to exist as its own brand and Zillow will commit additional engineering resources to help the company grow.

HotPads, Zillow tells us, attracted about 2.8 million unique users in October. Nearly 70% of the listings these users looked at were apartments for rent. On Zillow, about 6 million users look at rentals each month according to the company?s own data.

Between Zillow Rentals and HotPads, Rascoff expects, the company can now offers a rentals marketplace at scale ? something that wasn?t previously available to users in the highly fragmented rentals market. For Zillow, this is also an opportunity to build a relationship with a younger audience ? the kind that?s shopping for a first rental apartment but not ready to buy yet. Once they get to the point where they are looking to buy, they will hopefully come back to the Zillow brand.

?This acquisition represents a significant step-change for Zillow Rentals, allowing us to dramatically increase the number of leads we send to landlords. HotPads has a younger, complementary and rental-focused audience. Now Zillow will become even more relevant to consumers at the beginning of their real estate life cycle,? said Spencer Rascoff, CEO of Zillow in a canned statement today. ?In addition, by acquiring an amazing engineering team, with a deep understanding of how people search for rentals and become tenants, we expect to accelerate our innovation and monetization of our rental marketplace.?

Zillow, of course, has lately made a number of investments in the growing online retail market, including the recent launch of its free marketplace with tools for rental professionals that was largely based upon the company?s June 2012 acquisition of rental relationship management service RentJuice. For Zillow, this is the sixth acquisition in the last two years. Just this month, the company announced its plans to buy mortgage technology company Mortech. In October, the company acquired Buyfolio and in June it acquired RentJuice. In 2011, it acquired Postlets and Diverse Solutions.

Zillow, Inc. founded and operates Zillow.com ? a leading online real estate marketplace dedicated to helping homeowners, buyers, sellers, renters, real estate agents, mortgage professionals, landlords, and property managers find and share vital information about homes, real estate, and mortgages. Zilow, Inc. also operates Zillow Mortgage Marketplace and Zillow Mobile. Rich Barton and Lloyd Frink started Zillow in early 2005, and Zillow.com launched in early 2006 with data and information on millions of U.S. homes. Zillow?s goal is to help...

NEW YORK (AP) ? Bye-bye Black Friday. So long Small Business Saturday. Now, it's Cyber Monday's turn.

Cyber Monday, coined in 2005 by a shopping trade group that noticed online sales spiked on the Monday following Thanksgiving, is the next in a series of days that stores are counting on to jumpstart the holiday shopping season.

It's estimated that this year's Cyber Monday will be the biggest online shopping day of the year for the third year in a row: According to research firm comScore, Americans are expected to spend $1.5 billion, up 20 percent from last year on Cyber Monday, as retailers have ramped up their deals to get shoppers to click on their websites.

Amazon.com, which is starting its Cyber Monday deals at midnight on Monday, is offering as much as 60 percent off a Panasonic VIERA 55-inch TV that's usually priced higher than $1,000. Sears is offering $430 off a Maytag washer and dryer, each on sale for $399. And Kmart is offering 75 percent off all of its diamond earrings and $60 off a 12-in-1 multigame table on sale for $89.99.

Retailers are hoping the deals will appeal to shoppers like Matt Sexton, 39, who for the first time plans to complete all of his holiday shopping online this year on his iPad tablet computer. Sexton, who plans to spend up to $4,000 this season, already shopped online on the day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday and found a laptop from Best Buy for $399, a $200 savings, among other deals.

"The descriptions and reviews are so much better online so you can compare and price shop and for the most part get free shipping," said Sexton, who lives in Queens, N.Y., and is a manager at a utility company.

Sexton also said that it's easier to return an online purchase to a physical store than it had been in previous years. "That helps with gifts," he said.

How well retailers fare on Cyber Monday will offer insight into Americans' evolving shopping habits during the holiday shopping season, a time when stores can make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue. With the growth in high speed Internet access and the wide use of smartphones and tablets, people are relying less on their work computers to shop than they did when Shop.org, the digital division of trade group The National Retail Federation, introduced the term "Cyber Monday."

"People years ago didn't have ... connectivity to shop online at their homes. So when they went back to work after Thanksgiving they'd shop on the Monday after," said Vicki Cantrell, executive director of Shop.org. "Now they don't need the work computer to be able to do that."

As a result, the period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday has become busy for online shopping as well. Indeed, online sales on Thanksgiving Day, traditionally not a popular day for online shopping, rose 32 percent over last year to $633 million, according to comScore. And online sales on Black Friday were up 26 percent from the same day last year, to $1.042 billion. It was the first time online sales on Black Friday surpassed $1 billion.

For the holiday season-to-date, comScore found that $13.7 billion has been spent online, marking a 16 percent increase over last year. The research firm predicts that online sales will surpass 10 percent of total retail spending this holiday season. The National Retail Federation estimates that overall retail sales in November and December will be up 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion

But as other days become popular for online shopping, Cyber Monday may lose some of its cache. To be sure, Cyber Monday hasn't always been the biggest online shopping day. In fact, up until three years ago, that title was historically earned by the last day shoppers could order items with standard shipping rates and get them delivered before Christmas. That day changes every year, but usually falls in late December.

Even though Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest shopping day this year, industry watchers say it could just be a matter of time before other days take that ranking.

"Of all the benchmark spending days, Thanksgiving is growing at the fastest rate, up 128 percent over the last five years," said Andrew Lipsman, a spokesman with comScore.

Legal marijuana is not in Pennsylvania's foreseeable future ...

Don?t expect the Keystone State to be the Key-stoned State anytime soon.

While voters in Colorado and Washington approved citizen-proposed referendums this month legalizing recreational marijuana use, Pennsylvania has a long way to go before such a question makes its way on the ballot, midstate attorneys and legalization advocates agree.

Supporters say legalizing marijuana would be a boon for the economy, potentially generating millions in tax revenue, while opponents argue readily available pot would lead to people using drugs with more devastating effects.

?I don?t need a study to tell me marijuana is a gateway drug. I see it every day,? Cumberland County District Attorney David J. Freed said. ?We in law enforcement have to clean up the mess.?

Dauphin County District Attorney Edward M. Marsico Jr. said an additional concern would be more people driving under the influence.

A Yale University study this year showed alcohol, cigarettes and marijuana were associated with an increased likelihood of prescription drug abuse in men ages 18-25. The findings were published online in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

But a three-year-old study funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services showed first-time marijuana use far outnumbered that of first-time heroin and cocaine use.

In 2009, about 2.3 million people over the age of 12 tried pot, while about 617,000 tried cocaine and about 180,000 tried heroin, according to the study.

?The current arguments (against legalization) are invalid,? said Derek Rosenzweig, cofounder of Pennsylvanians for Medical Marijuana and spokesman for the Philadelphia chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. ?There are so many reasons to go forward with it.?

Rosenzweig and others believe legalizing weed would bring the state millions in tax revenue, reduce law enforcement costs and bring in more tourism dollars.

Colorado?s law, for instance, gives state and local government the ability to control and tax the sale of small amounts of marijuana to adults age 21 and older. Analysts project the tax revenue could generate somewhere between $5 million and $22 million in the state.

But there are other benefits, Rosenzweig said.

?It would engender a better relationship between law enforcement and the general public,? he said. ?People can be secure in the fact they?re not doing anything illegal.?

Pro-pot groups hope to see legislation introduced in 2013 that would legalize marijuana for medicinal use. Currently, 18 states and the District of Columbia permit medical marijuana.

Similar proposals have failed in Pennsylvania?s General Assembly in 2009 and 2011. In addition, Gov. Tom Corbett has said he would veto any legalization bill, including medical marijuana, citing marijuana as a ?gateway drug.?

Nevertheless, Rosenzweig believes there?s support in Pennsylvania not just for medical marijuana, but for recreational use, too.

In Pennsylvania, a change in the law would have to come from the Legislature, unlike other states such as Colorado and Washington which permit citizen-initiated referendums.

Possession of a small amount of marijuana ? defined as less than 30 grams ? is a misdemeanor in Pennsylvania. Penalties are up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Freed believes the law shouldn?t change.

?I do take a hard line on major dealers and manufacturers for two reasons,? he said. ?Drug dealing, any drug, is inherently violent activity.?

Gift guide for gamers | FOX13Now.com ? Salt Lake City, Utah News ...

(CNN) ? This holiday season, shopping for the gamer in your life is easier ? and harder. Easier because there are so many great choices, you can?t go wrong. Harder because, with the release of the new Wii U console and the launch of the PlayStation Vita handheld console this year, there are so many choices, you won?t be able to pick.

Check out my handy gift guide to get ideas for each type of gamer on your list:

The PC gamer: The computer gamer is probably looking for one thing: more time to play. But in case you want to give them something else to distract them, ?Guild Wars 2? is an online role-playing game that lets players dive deep into a fantasy world and have an impact with their actions. Unlike other MMORPGs, there is no monthly subscription fee, making it a great (one-time) purchase.

If they missed the craze this year, pick up ?Diablo III.? Or opt for other also-on-consoles games like ?Mass Effect 3? or ?Max Payne 3.?

If it isn?t software they need, Logitech introduced a new G600 MMO gaming mouse this year, featuring three profiles, 20 programmable keys and a new sculpted shape to ease fatigue from hours of gaming.

The serious gamer: The serious gamer is ready to become one with the console and be challenged with action, adventure and good storytelling.

?Dishonored? offers a play-it-your-way style split between stealth and combat. Combining that style with a good story, this title will have players diving back in after finishing their first run, just to see how their actions change the story.

?Borderlands 2? is less about the story and more about the guns. There are tons of weapons to be discovered and used throughout Pandora. But pay attention to the dialogue ? lots of laughs among the bloodshed. If they already have the game, think about getting the downloadable content offerings to let them continue their experiences.

?Call of Duty: Black Ops II? is another selection guaranteed to tap into your gamer?s aggressive side. The vehicle combat scenarios are particularly intense.

If it is mental stimulation they crave, ?XCOM: Enemy Unknown? is a turn-based game that challenges players to plan, think and enact strategies to save the world. Balancing short-term gains for long-term goals is key to success.

The casual gamer: The casual gamer wants to drop into and out of games at their leisure.

?New Super Mario Bros. U? is the flagship title for the new Wii U console and brings Mario and friends to life in high-definition. The platforming action is bolder and brighter than ever as the intrepid plumber runs through worlds to save the Princess (once again).

Combining the two great franchises, ?LEGO The Lord of the Rings? mixes the classic Tolkien tale, dialogue from the Peter Jackson movies and a dash of blocky fun to create an exciting game for all ages. Pay particular attention to the funny bits during some of the more dramatic scenes.

Maybe it?s racing they crave? ?Little Big Planet Karting? puts Sackboy on the track to save the kingdom through a series of races across very non-NASCAR-sanctioned tracks. He and his racing machine can be customized so players can exercise their creativity while fulfilling their need for speed.

The kid gamer: The kid (or kid-at-heart) gamer is looking for fun, excitement and a touch of something extra.

Why not a physical toy that doubles as a gaming piece? ?Skylanders Giants? extends the franchise this year with new collectable figures that connect with gaming consoles to create a sort of video game magic. The pieces are interchangeable for different gaming platforms. So if you have a PS3 version of the game, you can still take your figures over to your friend?s house to plan on an Xbox 360.

Plus, the toys can be enjoyed as action figures away from the consoles.

Tapping into the magic of Harry Potter, ?Wonderbook? transforms your PlayStation 3 into an interactive storytelling machine. The first title, ?Book of Spells,? is based on the Harry Potter universe and written by J.K. Rowling. Players control the action, creating spells, fighting battles and becoming part of the story.

Finally, Maxwell is back and has to travel the world to save his sister in the new ?Scribblenauts Unlimited.? The puzzle game challenges kids to come up with creative solutions to problems Maxwell faces in his journeys. Write the word in his magical notebook, and it comes to life on the screen to allow him to progress and find the magic to stop his sister from turning to stone.

Still stuck? Still not sure what to get your gamer? Don?t worry. While it might seem like a cop-out to some, gift cards are sure to be a hit with players. This will allow them to explore their opportunities for new games, devices or downloadable content. Many shopping websites offer electronic gift certificates as well.

Gift cards also work well if they have their eye on some new titles coming out in 2013 like ?BioShock Infinite,? ?Dead Space 3? or ?Pikmin 3.?

Gamers are always looking for the next big thing.

Happy holidays and happy gaming.
