Emergency Food Supplies - My Favorites | Snafu::Blog - Disaster ...

The most helpful, usable, tasty emergency supplies? my favorites? that I look forward to eating when it comes time to rotate them, in the order in which I thought of them for this post:

Boxed milk - Muscle Milk, Organic chocolate milk, Organic milk. A quick boost of protein with its own water built-in, a big win-win that supplements water supplies.

Protein bars- my favorite is VPX Zero Carbs, peanut butter and jelly flavor. 30 grams protein in a macronurient-balanced, good tasting bar with a fairly long expiration date.

Fruit in a can. My favorite is Del Monte Tropical Mix.

Diced organic tomatoes from Costco. They are so good. I drain the can of liquid, drink that, and then use the tomatoes in so many other things. And they are very inexpensive.

Olives. Long expiration date on most of them, especial black olives. Good fats, good amount of calories, no prep? just open the can (you do have extra can openers, right?) and eat ?em.

Fish in a can. That sounds bad, but it?s not. Smoked Kipper Snacks are gourmet but inexpensive. Then there is salmon? king of the canned fish? you can eat it right out of the can, no heating necessary, just like tuna. Which of course brings up tuna. I hate tuna plain. Too dry.

That?s why I have individual packages of mayonnaise in case electricity/refrigeration goes off. If you open a large jar of mayo, it goes very, very, very bad, very quickly. Can give you food poisoning easily. I?m okay with using mustard, but it?s not as good as good ol? mayo. Downside is the individual packs usually do not have a very long expiration date, which means you have to use them or lose them. It is the one item we are likely to have to toss rather than get a use out of it. But it?s worth it to me to have them on hand. An extravagance, I suppose.

Polenta. You can eat it without cooking it if need be, but it?s so good fried, or cooked with meat and salsa and tomatoes and garlic and beans. Or so many other ways. Key is you do not have to heat it if there is no heat to be had. It?s a source of carbs with a very long expiration date.

Chips. We do a variety of organic very flavorful chips. Lasts so much longer than bread. We?ve found we use them up better than crackers, although either is a good choice. Just get your favorite taste. Guiltless pleasure.

Spaghetti sauce. Again, no heating required, although of course better tasting that way. Very healthful, especially the organic kind, which is the only kind we use. We are seriously non-GMO. We have to be, in order to have the stamina to do our hard-core bodybuilding and other heavy work. Just can?t lift as much on junk food. Which is really all food that is not non-GMO.

Non-sugar canned drinks. Again, an adjunct to water supplies, one that is pretty much absolutely guaranteed to be free of harmful bacteria when other supplies could be polluted. Just be sure to sterilize the part of the can you drink from. Really. Otherwise you don?t know what you?re bringing into your body with that first gulp. And be sure to clean off whatever you use to sterilize it before you drink. In normal times, I just wipe the can top on my shirt. But when things get bad, I will get more serious about it. I don?t want to drink something and then vomit for several days because I was not paranoid enough.

The concept of cleaning off the container of food is universal. If you are not going to cook what is in a can, you will be eating? raw? whatever was on the outside of the can, if you don?t clean it off first. Why we are not taught that in grade school is beyond me. Now we have even started to realize that, for example, a package of cheese could pick up ANYTHING on the outside of it as it goes through the chain of distribution. So we now spray sanitizer on the outside, let sit for a little, and wash that off good with water before we open it. Because as you cut through the package to get to the cheese, you usually cut into the cheese itself, and you bring whatever was on the outside into the cheese. Yuck.

Same with fruit and vegetables. If you do not wash off the outside, you bring whatever was on it into the inside when you cut into it. If you are thoroughly cooking it, no problem. If you are eating it fresh? big problem.

We have noticed that partially used food has lasted significantly longer in the refrigerator since we all started doing this each and every time we opened something. So it makes you money while it significantly reduces the chances of food poisoning.

Chocolate. Energy, good fats, pleasantness, no prep or cooking. Total win. Our favorite has become organic chocolate with organic almonds in. My good friend, who did not used to like chocolate that much, is now a chocolate/almond addict.

Salsa. Cheap and organic at Costco. We have a dozen or more 2-packs in our stores at all times. So good, so many uses.

Rice. Prime food. We do organic rice. It?s costly. But worth it.

Nuts. All kinds, all sorts. Unfortunately we don?t have a good source for organic nuts, so we cheat here, I?m sorry to admit. We?re not perfect. But still, they are ready to eat in any circumstances, and that?s got to be something. And on rare occasion, I crave them. They must supply something I?m not getting in my diet at the time.

Salt. NOT regular salt. Unrefined sea salt. We use RealSalt. For so many reasons. Got to have salt. Must have salt. Get salt.

? and there are many more ?favorites?, but this is long enough.

Bottom line: get foods to put away for emergencies that you LIKE, that you will enjoy eating in an emergency situation, but also just regularly, because you have to rotate your stocks before their expiration dates.

And as is obvious in these times of 10-percent-plus food inflation, the food you buy today costs less than the food you will buy in the future. If you stock your emergency supplies well, and rotate on time, you will MAKE MONEY being prepared for emergencies.

And that is great fun.
