Scientists challenge current theories about natural habitats and species diversity

Dec. 30, 2012 ? How can a square meter of meadow contain tens of species of plants? And what factors determine the number of species that live in an ecosystem? Science journal has defined this as one of the 25 most important unresolved questions in science, both for its importance in understanding nature and due to the value of natural ecosystems for humankind. The value of goods and services provided by natural ecosystems is estimated to exceed the GDP of our planet.

For over 50 years, conventional ecological theories have predicted that the number of species that can coexist in a given area increases with the heterogeneity of the environmental conditions in the habitat. This premise was examined in a study conducted by research students Omri Allouche and Michael Kalyuzhny, guided by Prof. Ronen Kadmon from the Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in collaboration with Prof. Gregorio Moreno-Rueda and Prof. Manuel Pizarro from Universidad de Granada.

The researchers claim that in a heterogeneous environment -- where there are many different types of habitats -- there are fewer resources and less suitable area available to each species, making them more vulnerable to local extinction. This leads to the hypothesis that excessive habitat heterogeneity may actually reduce the number of species.

This hypothesis was examined using mathematical models and empirical analyses of natural ecosystems. Its predictions were examined with a meta-analysis of tens of datasets of plant and animal species from various localities worldwide.

Both the theoretical results and the data analyses supported the researchers' hypothesis that habitat heterogeneity may increase the rate of species extinctions and therefore reduce the number of species that inhabit the ecosystem.

These findings are very important for the conservation of biodiversity, since the current practice is to conserve areas of maximal habitat heterogeneity and even to take measures to increase habitat heterogeneity. The study shows that this conventional approach may lead to negative results, especially in the case of landscapes of limited size, which is typical of nature reserves.

Ecosystems and the species they consist of are under increasing pressure of human activity. In these conditions, skillful and intelligent management of natural landscapes is vital. This study provides scientists and policy makers with important insights for the selection and management of areas for conservation.

The study, Area-heterogeneity tradeoff and the diversity of ecological communities, was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. It was funded by the Israel Science Foundation and by Israel's Ministry of Science and Technology.

Venezuela's Chavez suffers new post-surgery complications

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is suffering further complications linked to a respiratory infection that hit him after his fourth cancer operation in Cuba, his vice president said in a somber broadcast on Sunday.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro flew to Cuba to visit Chavez in the hospital as supporters' fears grow for the ailing 58-year-old socialist leader, who has not been seen in public nor heard from in three weeks.

Chavez had already suffered unexpected bleeding caused by the six-hour operation on December 11 for an undisclosed form of cancer in his pelvic area, and officials say doctors then had to fight a respiratory infection.

"Just a few minutes ago we were with President Chavez. He greeted us and he himself talked about these complications," Maduro said in the broadcast, adding that the third set of complications arose because of the respiratory infection.

"Thanks to his physical and spiritual strength, Comandante Chavez is confronting this difficult situation."

Maduro, flanked by his wife Attorney-General Cilia Flores, Chavez's daughter Rosa Virginia and her husband, Science Minister Jorge Arreaza, said he would remain in Havana while Chavez's condition evolved.

Chavez's resignation for health reasons, or his death, would upend politics in the OPEC nation where his personalized brand of oil-financed socialism has made him a hero to the poor but a pariah to critics who call him a dictator.

The president's allies have been openly discussing the possibility that he may not be able to return to swear in for his third six-year term on the constitutionally mandated date of January 10.

Opposition leaders say a postponement would be another signal Chavez is not in a fit state to govern and that new elections should be called to choose his replacement.

They believe they have a better shot against Maduro, who was named earlier this month by Chavez as his heir apparent, than against the charismatic president who for 14 years has been nearly invincible at the ballot box.

Any constitutional dispute over succession could lead to a messy transition toward a post-Chavez era in the country with the biggest oil reserves in the world.

Maduro has become the face of the government in Chavez's absence, imitating the president's bombastic style and sharp criticism of the United States and its "imperialist" policies.

The 9 Best Video Games Of 2012

2012 has been pretty good to us neckbeards now that the year is almost in the books. Sequels flourished and floundered, indie games made waves and some surprising titles caught gamers off guard. What's most important is, despite the usual holiday season heavyweights, there's been plenty of worthy of titles released to add to your catalog. That is, unless you're one of those forum-dwelling whiners pining for the days when games "belonged" to gamers or whatever.

Anyway, now's not the time to be jaded; not with all these great vidya games lying about. TSS's resident geeks felt compelled to share their favorite games with you, the readers, for you to agree, disagree and bicker about in the comments. Check out our picks and give them a try if you haven't yet.

Walking Dead: The Game (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac OSX, iOS) ? Tell Tale Games

The Walking Dead is an emotional roller coaster where the story compels you so much that you actually question your own morals and values. Its objectives and decisions range from who gets the last rations, to who do you save first before their intestines are ripped out by a group of bloodthirsty zombies. The quick time events, art direction, storyline, game stability and sound are all perfect: rendering this adventure title a sure classic. And once you?re done you will understand how the game moved 3.8 million units and the Twitter phenomena #ForClementine (click at your own risk.)

Mass Effect 3 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) ? EA Games

This epic Sci-Fi space saga not-named Star Wars was all the rage in 2012. ME3 went down as being the most anticipated game this year, as well as the most infamous. The gameplay was even better than before, with more fluid controls, intense action and cream-of-the-crop graphics, all coated with its well-crafted story. All controversy aside, this title was damn good from the beginning; making this trilogy something gamers can be proud of for years to come.

The Last Story (Wii) - Xseed Games

With the Wii on it's last leg in 2012, the port of The Last Story to North America bought much surprise. This was because we here stateside don't generally get JRPG games with a plot we can relate with or gameplay that keeps our short attention spans. This game, though, incorporated many of Final Fantasy's in-depth story style and real-time battles. Compile a fun control-scheme with the Wiimotes, the best graphics the Wii has to offer, a not-so-weird-Japanese love story and you got yourself one of the best games in 2012 and in the Wii's catalog.

Hotline Miami (PC, Mac OSX) - Devolver Digital

This game right here... is one of the most gruesome and violent games released commercially in the US since Manhunt 2 in 2007, and embodies graphics from the 8-bit era. It's got an eerie, good Fight Club-style story with twitchy, fast-paced gameplay, tons of unlockables, strategy elements and a learning curve that will have you pulling your hair out and kicking the dog. On top of that the original 80's theme soundtrack is excellent: placing you right in the action of this crazy game. Once you start, you will not want to quit until you beat it.

Far Cry 3 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) - Ubisoft

The third entry in the Far Cry series sinks its devious hooks into the gamer within the first twisted cut-scene, and doesn't let go. Great gameplay, a beautiful, expansive sandbox-style island to explore and one of the most compelling stories of the year deftly combine to create a clear-cut Game Of The Year. The diehard crowd might try to throw rocks at Ubisoft over a multiplayer that doesn't measure up to Call Of Duty*, but get over it. The amount of polished content packed into the single player more than makes up for it.

*Why the hell would you go anywhere but COD or maybe Halo for multiplayer shooters? Let's just stop making unfair comparisons.

FIFA 2013 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Portable, Wii U, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, iOS, Android, Mac OSX) - EA Games

Same ol' song and dance for EA Sports' flagship? Hardly. FIFA continues to improve, implementing small, subtle additions to gameplay and presentation that add to the game's touted realism. No longer do players on the pitch react uniformly to through balls, lob passes and headers, as decided by EA's newly-implemented first touch system. When paired with teams that are constantly changing with their real-life counterparts, the result is the most realistic depiction of soccer we've ever seen.

Borderlands 2 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) - 2K Games

Half shooter, half RPG and all awesome, Borderlands 2 easily gives you one of the best bang for your buck values in games this year. The lengthy campaign comes fully fledged with well designed missions, a great villain and plenty of laugh out loud moments via its writing. Good times await potential vault hunters especially if you have friends to play with. Couch and online co op yield all kinds of memorable moments and may make you wonder why you bothered raging at COD all this time.

Forza Horizon (Xbox 360) - Microsoft Studios

Horizon's stupendous blend of sim and "arcade" handling makes for plenty of fun races and hours of enjoyable joy riding at your fingertips. Occasional rubber banding kind of sucks later in the game. However adjustable difficulty settings and online play will hold you down if the campaign gets rough. The game world is easy on the eyes and a joy to roll through at your leisure. Heck, even the hipster-trash soundtrack might grow on you. Give the game a chance and, before you know it, you'll start singing Tesla Boy's "Spirit of the Night" in your Miami Vice '88 Countach.

Trials Evolution (Xbox 360) - Microsoft Studios, Ubisoft and RedLynx

Ridiculous courses, a great map share feature, on/offline multiplayer support and a carefree, humorous vibe easily make Trials Evolution a must play for any 360 owner. Trials Evo is also a riot as the jumps, crashes and wacky physics WILL make you laugh like few games can. This downloadable title is so well made you might accidentally open your disc tray a few times whenever your through.

Jamaica One of the Favorite Locations for India Weddings

The string of all-inclusive beach resorts in Jamaica have hosted a number of Indian-style weddings in the past year. At least four Indian weddings took place in the famed Montego Bay area, the playground of the rich and the famous, in November and a similar number of weddings are scheduled for the next few months.

Not too far from America's southeast coast, Jamaica is a most sought after wedding destination during the dreary winter months.

In December, Kerry and Sam Singh, the newly-elected Congressman from the Michigan state assembly took their wedding vows at a beach resort in the Montego Bay area. US-born Sam Singh is a former two-term mayor of East Lansing town. An avid traveller, he took 15 months off from his political and professional activities to travel around the world. It was natural for him to choose an exotic location for his wedding and guests from Michigan and India attended the beach wedding early in December.

Just a couple of weeks before the Singh wedding, some members of the small Indian community in MoBay, as Montego Bay is known locally, were contacted by a wedding planner with an urgent request. A wedding party had asked for an Indian drum for the wedding festivities. It was for a big wedding planned for mid-November for a couple of doctors from New Jersey with a guest list of over 300. Under the impression that it was a dholak that was required for a ladies sangeet function, the one used for the weekly satsang was shown to the wedding planner, who sent a picture to the groom's parents. But it turned out that the wedding party wanted a 'dhol' (big drum) for the groom's procession. Finally a local businessman offered to fly out a dhol player from Miami for the function.

Another wedding party from Michigan was better equipped when they reached Jamaica a couple of weeks later. They had hired Sachin Gupta, a DJ and dhol-player well known on the Indian festive circuit in the Detroit area, to handle the Indian music during the wedding festivities. The wedding took place over the Thanksgiving weekend (Nov 24-27), with Sachin Gupta's dhol-playing kicking up a storm in the island known for its calypso, reggae and rasta music.

All-inclusive holiday resorts that offer three meals, unlimited snacks, drinks and beverages and other facilities for a set cover charge suit American wedding groups and many of them have geared up to cater to the requirements of an Indian wedding. The luxurious beach resorts have learnt to offer special facilities to make the great Indian weddings a grand success.

While destination weddings normally involve about 20-50 guests, the numbers at Indian weddings can be anywhere from 100 to 300 baraatis - the groom's family and friends and the bride's family and friends.

Wedding planners at resort hotels have learnt to cater to a variety of requests, from supplying mehndi services and Indian chefs to Indian singers, often calling on the Indian community for help in sourcing the services.

Prominent businessman and former president of MoBay Indian Association Rajkumar Sablani explained that Mobay like the other Jamaican towns has a small but well-knit Indian community that is willing to help when required. Indians in Jamaica came from different parts of India and retain close ties with their families back home. The majority of them are engaged in trade and business activities. The community has grown to the size that "most of the necessities of Indians living in Jamaica are now available. Some years ago it was difficult to get whole-wheat flour (atta) and Indian foodstuff here. We had to import from Miami, but now most things are available locally," Sablani told IANS.

Blackburn euphonium player gains prestigious music college place

A TEENAGE Blackburn musician has proven he has the key to success after being accepted at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Daniel Thomas, 17, who attends St Wilfrid?s High School in Blackburn, has been playing the euphonium since the age of seven.

He is delighted to be one of the chosen few to be selected for the coveted places at the nationally acclaimed school for aspiring musicians.

Daniel, of Heartwood Close, Blackburn, said his dad, who is the head of music at St Bede?s RC High School, and his mum, who plays the cornet, have always encouraged him to be involved in music.

He said: ?I was delighted when I found out I had been accepted. I couldn?t believe it.

?It was my first choice and it?s the best place in the world for a euphonium player to go.?

Daniel will start the four year musical performance degree next September and is eager to start.

He said: ?The course will give me time to make sure I know the instrument inside and out and master the instrument. I will be able to go around the country, and possibly around the world, playing in some of the best brass bands.

?To be accepted is an honour and a privilege and I can?t wait to start. This offer had helped to set me in the right direction for the future.

?I have always enjoyed playing. I practice every day for an hour and perform in concerts with the Blackburn and Darwen Brass Band.

?I am also learning to play the trombone so that I can play in the orchestra for musicals in the pit.

?My parents are especially happy.?

Last year Daniel was named the most improved player of the year and bandsman of the year at the Blackburn and Darwen Brass Band?s annual awards.

Create a Successful Wellness Plan

When a New Year takes hold, it is always beneficial to reflect upon where you have been as well as look ahead to where you want to go. I was raised to always have a strategy for my life whether it be in the form of a one-year, five-year or ten-year plan. So as not to flounder, it?s always useful to have a plan, especially when it comes to your wellness.

In business, planning often occurs annually with quarterly check-in?s to make sure all is on track. Typical plans include consideration of budgets, manpower, time, priorities, etc. Have you ever thought about your personal annual budget, the amount of time you really want to work versus spend with family and friends, your true priorities in life, a food budget for your nutritional goals, an exercise budget for your fitness goals, etc.?

What would happen if you practiced the same technique for your personal life? What if you planned out your year in advance and once a quarter checked in with yourself to make sure you?re still headed where you want? Could this simple act help reduce stress because you?re practicing proactive versus reactive behavior? Could it set you up for success and better health because you?re following a path you've chosen versus taking one you thought was expected?

The quality of your wellness today is in direct correlation to the choices you made in the past. The choices you make today and onward will determine your future wellness. When you choose to plan and then make the conscious choice to act on your plan, you will manifest your intentions and live in wellness now.

Five Steps to a Successful Wellness Plan:

1. Vision: What is your vision for your wellness? Take some time to list what you most desire to achieve and/or experience with your wellness. Try dividing this list into sections: Overall lifestyle, Medical, Nutritional, Fitness, and Spiritual.

2. Intentions: Pulling from your Vision List, specify intentions for your personal wellness that you will accomplish over the next 12 months.

3. Values: Prioritize the values you will be honoring by bringing your intentions to fruition.

4. SMART Plan: What goals and objectives (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely) must be achieved in order to fulfill your intentions without compromising your values?

5. Actions/Tasks: Create a prioritized list of action-oriented tasks to complete your intentions for the year. Break them down into daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly segments. Check in regularly to ensure you?re on your chosen path. If not, adjust and continue. If so, congratulate yourself and keep moving forward!!

Low-Calorie Drinks for Dieters

  • What You Want: A Dirty Martini (220 To 330 Calories*)

<strong>A better choice: Hot-pepper-infused vodka over ice with an olive (105 calories)</strong> Like the suave gentleman who bought this for you at the bar, martinis can be sneaky. A 4-ounce drink has around 220 calories, and many generous bartenders serve martinis in larger glasses. "The bigger a drink, the more alcohol it has and, therefore, the more calories it has," says Stephanie Clarke, MS, RD, a <a href="http://www.thebestlife.com/">Best Life nutritionist</a> and co-owner of C&J Nutrition in Manhattan. The addition of olive brine in a dirty martini only adds about 20 extra calories, which isn't a big deal -- but the sodium is, says Clarke. "It can increase your thirst, which you may try to quench with more alcohol, and can also make you feel bloated the next day." The pepper in this drink is subtle; it's not like drinking a bottle of hot sauce. At home, <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-lagasse/spicy-pepper-vodka-martini-recipe/index.html">try infusing vodka using this recipe from Emeril Lagasse. </a> *Calorie sources: <a href="http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/">NIH Alcohol Calorie Counter, USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference</a>

  • What You Want: A Cosmopolitan (212 Calories Per 4-Ounce Serving)

<strong>A better choice: Raspberry-infused vodka with club soda, a splash of cranberry and a lime (115 calories)</strong> A little vodka, a little Cointreau, some cranberry juice -- you may as well be sipping a pack of liquefied fruit chews. And the more splashes of juice and shots of alcohol you add, the higher the calories climb. This still doesn't mean that you need to give up your favorite cocktail. "We tell clients who are trying to lose weight to have that drink but to treat it like a treat or a piece of cake," says Willow Jarosh, MS, RD, a <a href="http://www.thebestlife.com/">Best Life nutritionist</a> and Clarke's partner at C&J Nutrition. If you opt for this lower-calorie version of your signature drink, you could even have two of them. Jarosh also suggests acting like a mixologist and experimenting with different fruit-infused vodkas and amounts of lime or lemon juice (both very low in calories).

  • What You Want: A Gin And Tonic (120 To 166 Calories)

<strong>A better choice: Equal parts gin and soda water and a splash of tonic (100 to 140 calories)</strong> Tonic water -- that bitter-tasting bubbly mixer whose key ingredient, quinine, was once used as an antimalarial medicine -- has almost as many calories and sugar as soda. "Most people think they're making a better choice by ordering a gin and tonic over a rum and Coke or a vodka and Sprite," says Jarosh, "but it's not true." She recommends cutting the quinine beverage with soda water rather than ordering diet tonic (or diet anything), because research suggests that zero-calorie artificial sweeteners can throw off the body's natural response to intense sweetness, <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/02/080210183902.htm">which can lead to weight gain</a>.

  • What You Want: A Mojito (Starts At 160 Calories)

<strong>A better choice: A Revitalize cocktail (134 calories)</strong> Clarke and Jarosh say that almost all mojito recipes involve sugar (be it confectioner's or agave), and some bartenders use more than the usual tablespoon. They suggest asking for your drink with "just a touch" of simple syrup (or none at all) and extra lime juice. They also came up with their own refreshing alternative, the Revitalize, which sounds like something you'd receive in an expensive spa (without the alcohol). Combine the following into a shaker: 1 ounce vodka muddled with 2 chunks cucumber, 1/2 ounce honey, 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice and 2 ounces cold green tea. Shake, pour over ice and garnish with a lime twist.

  • What You Want: Spiked Eggnog (Starts At 246 Calories, 9 Grams Fat, 6 Grams Saturated Fat)

<strong>A better choice: <a href="http://sodeliciousdairyfree.com/products/coconut-milk-beverages/nog">Coconut milk nog</a> (per half-cup serving: 90 calories, 3 grams saturated fat)</strong> Compared to the traditional recipe made with milk, cream and eggs, dairy-free nog made from coconut milk has about half the calories and a fraction of the fat. It's surprisingly creamy, and the coconut flavor may trick you into thinking you've already added a shot of rum (saving you about 100 calories). For traditionalists, Clarke suggests making your own recipe at home using 1 percent milk instead of whole and trying evaporated skim milk instead of cream.

  • What You Want: A Kir Royale (219 Calories Per 6.5-Ounce Glass)

<strong>A better choice: Sparkling ros? (115 calories per 6-ounce glass)</strong> Because of its blush hue, sparkling ros? looks just as festive as a Kir Royale, but holding the cr?me de cassis saves about 90 calories. At your next party, pop open a bottle of <a href="http://www.oprah.com/food/Wine-and-Chocolate-Pairings/4">Piper-Heidsieck Brut Ros? Sauvage or Gruet Grand Ros?.</a>

  • What You Want: Hot Cocoa With Bailey's (Minimum 180 Calories, 9 Grams Fat)

<strong>A better choice: A hot toddy (113 calories, 0 grams fat)</strong> It's nice to have something warm and sweet that you can wrap your hands around at those post-caroling get-togethers and tree-trimming parties. To save calories and fat, pour boiling hot water (or black tea) into a mug and add a half-shot of brandy, bourbon or whiskey, a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of lemon juice.

  • What You Want: A Margarita (168 To 504 Calories)

<strong>A better choice: Tequila over ice with two limes (100 calories)</strong> The biggest threat posed by a margarita, says Jarosh, is the nonstandardized size. "Some places serve them as 8-ounce drinks, others as 12 ounces, and that can make a huge difference," she says. You'll always know how much alcohol you're getting if you order a shot of high-end tequila on the rocks with maybe a splash of soda and an extra lime, and this makes for a good sipping drink.

  • What You Want: A Beer**

<strong>A better choice: A shandy or Michelada</strong> Both of these beverages are easy, flavorful ways to extend your beer and, therefore, drink less over the course of a night. To make a low-calorie shandy, add one part lemon-flavored seltzer and a squeeze of lemon to two parts beer. For Micheladas, which originated in Mexico, add dashes of hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and black pepper as well as the juice of a lime into a pint glass. Add ice and pour the lager (preferably Mexican) over the top. As you sip, you can continue to top off the drink with lager from the bottle. Jarosh says this south-of-the-border beer cocktail has other benefits as well. Recent research suggests that hot, spicy flavors may help make you feel more full and can even create a tiny (although temporary) spike in metabolism -- just what you need on a chilly winter night. **The calories range widely depending on the type and the ABV, or alcohol by volume.

  • What You Want: Red Wine (115 Calories Per 6 Ounces)

<strong>A better choice: Mulled red wine (115 calories per 6 ounces)</strong> This isn't about the calories; it's about the tendency to enjoy red wine a little too much. If you're worried about overdoing it, Clarke and Jarosh came up with the idea to simmer a bottle of red wine with mulling spices (but no sugar) in a saucepan on the stove. We're less likely to chug hot beverages, says Clarke, so we tend to finish them more slowly and drink fewer of them.

TEXT-S&P cuts Consolidated Minerals to 'B-'; outlook negative

    Rationale

The downgrade reflects our view that protracted softness in the manganese

market will continue to pressure ConsMin's EBITDA in the fourth quarter of

2012 and in 2013. We therefore expect that the group's leverage will be high,

with a Standard & Poor's ratio of adjusted debt to EBITDA at more than 10x at

year-end 2012, compared with 3.5x at the end of 2011. We also factor in the

prevailing uncertainty on the supply-demand balance and price for manganese in

2013, which we think may prevent ConsMin from improving EBITDA and lead to

continued negative free operating cash flow (FOCF). The downgrade also takes

into account our view, under our criteria, of the group's "less than adequate"

liquidity, which we think could weaken further if FOCF turns substantially

    negative.

Lower Chinese imports of manganese pulled down ConsMin's sales volumes by 18%

in the first nine months of 2012, with a particularly severe contraction in

the Electrolytic Manganese Metal (EMM) end market. We expect very weak

fourth-quarter results, given the lower benchmark manganese price of $5.2/dmtu

(dry metric ton unit) during the period (versus $5.35/dmtu in the third

quarter), and the group's decision to temporarily halt production in Ghana in

November and December in order to focus on waste stripping amid feeble demand

    from the EMM market.

We think that the group will post weak EBITDA of about $32 million for

    full-year 2012 (excluding a noncash inventory write-back of about $34

million), assuming that fourth-quarter EBITDA is close to breakeven. Its cash

balances at the end of 2012 will likely decrease to about $80 million from

    $133 million reported on Sept. 30, 2012.

In our base-case scenario for 2013 we factor in EBITDA of about $90 million

and debt to EBITDA below 5x for ConsMin. This is based on the following

    assumptions:

-- A benchmark manganese price of $5.2/dmtu as we don't expect markedly

stronger demand for manganese ore in 2013 given the weak steel industry

    conditions globally.

-- Further reductions of cash costs, which in our view will likely be the

main boost to ConsMin's EBITDA. This year, the group successfully completed

the transition from contractor mining to owner-operated mining in Australia,

thereby lowering its cash costs to $2.93/dmtu in the third quarter of 2012

from $3.63/dmtu in the same period in 2011. ConsMin should be able to achieve

additional cash cost cuts by switching to lower strip ratio pits in Australia

    for the next 2-3 years.

We also take into account what we view as considerable downside risks to our

    forecast, such as:

-- The lower manganese price, and

-- The group's inability to execute the cash reduction program, although

we note its good track record in 2012, and

    -- Potential Australian dollar appreciation.

If 2013 EBITDA is markedly below our base case of $90 million, this would

likely lead to substantially negative FOCF and consequently weaker liquidity.

    Liquidity

We assess ConsMin's liquidity as "less than adequate" under our criteria. We

think that ConsMin has limited relationships with commercial banks, as

demonstrated by the absence of sizable and long term committed liquidity

facilities. We also think that the group has limited ability to absorb a

high-impact, low probability event without need for refinancing. We also think

that material negative FOCF could tighten liquidity.

We estimate ConsMin's ratio of liquidity sources to uses at more than 1x for

    the 12 months starting Oct. 1, 2012.

Key liquidity sources over this period include:

Surplus cash of about $87 million, after deduction of $30 million that we view

as tied to operations and $16 million of pledged cash.

Funds from operations of about $40 million.

$11 million under equipment-financing facility in Australia.

We project the following uses over the same period:

Capital spending of $60 million. We note that the group has the flexibility to

cut its capex if market conditions deteriorate.

No dividends and no substantial debt maturities in the next two years.

ConsMin has $22 million available under the overdraft facility in Ghana that

matures on Dec. 31, 2013. We exclude it from the liquidity sources because of

its relatively short-term maturity and the need for the group to renew it each

    year.

Additional liquidity sources could stem from ConsMin's ability to divest its

minority stakes in two Australian listed mining companies, OM Holdings Ltd.

(not rated) and BC Iron Ltd. (not rated). The market value of these stakes was

    $86.2 million on Sept. 30, 2012.

On the positive side, ConsMin no longer has any maintenance financial

covenants since it repaid its Australian working capital facility. The bond

documentation contains incurrence covenants: a fixed charge coverage ratio of

at least 2.5x and senior secured leverage below 2.5x. We expect these levels

were exceeded as of end-September 2012.

Still, we think that the permitted debt basket leaves substantial leeway for

    additional funding.

    Recovery analysis

The issue rating on ConsMin's $405 million senior secured notes due 2016

(which includes the $34 million spent on buying back outstanding notes held as

Treasury stock as of Sept. 30, 2012) is 'B-', in line with the corporate

credit rating on the company. The recovery rating on the notes is '4',

indicating our expectation of average (30%-50%) recovery in the event of a

    payment default.

The recovery rating on the notes reflects ConsMin's tangible asset value and

the guarantees and security provided for the notes. At the same time, recovery

prospects are constrained by material, senior claims with a legal or

structural advantage, which are attached to some of the company's valuable

Australian assets. Weaker enforceability prospects in the more uncertain

Ghanaian jurisdiction further constrain recovery prospects.

The notes are guaranteed by subsidiaries representing 86% of consolidated

total assets at end-December 2011 and benefit from the following:

A first-ranking lien over all of the shares in the issuer and the guarantors

that are located outside of Australia.

A first-ranking lien equitable mortgage over all of the shares in the

Australia-based guarantors, and a first-ranking lien over substantially all of

their property and assets (excluding the priority security).

A second-ranking charge over inventory and stockpiles of ore held by the

Australian guarantors, as well as over accounts receivable from the sales of

such ore (the "priority security"). However, at enforcement, the notes will

rank second in right of payment behind the credit facilities in respect of the

proceeds of the Australian security package.

We believe that the most likely center of main interest will be Jersey (U.K.)

or Australia, where the most valuable security is located and where we believe

there are creditor-friendly insolvency regimes. However, we note that the

company generates a substantial part of its earnings in Ghana (B/Stable/B), a

country with a degree of sovereign risk and whose insolvency regime and

    jurisdiction we have not analyzed.

Our simulated default scenario contemplates a default in 2014, mainly owing to

volatility in the manganese mining industry, combined with ConsMin's potential

    inability to service its debt.

We value the company as a going concern. This is because we believe it would

most likely be reorganized in the event of a hypothetical default, given its

good position in the manganese market. We calculate ConsMin's EBITDA at about

$60 million at the time of simulated default. Assuming a 4.5x multiple of

EBITDA at default--to account for the volatility of valuations in the sector

and the location of assets--we obtain a gross enterprise value of about $270

    million.

After deducting priority liabilities, drawings under the $20 million

equipment-financing facility, and permitted debt under the covenants, we

calculate that about $165 million would be available for noteholders. Of

these, we estimate that about 70% would come from Australia, the most reliable

jurisdiction in insolvency situations (in spite of the current

underperformance) and the provider of tangible asset security to the notes,

although there could be upside coming from the asset security provided in

Ghana, as the company has generated and will likely generate a significant

portion of its EBITDA there. In addition, our valuation includes six months of

prepetition interest. We therefore anticipate average (30%-50%) recovery

prospects for the $405 million notes, which equates to a recovery rating of

    '4'.

    Outlook

The negative outlook reflects the risk of a downgrade in the next 12 months if

we saw a substantial reduction in ConsMin's cash balance and ensuing

deterioration in its liquidity. This could stem from sizable negative FOCF in

2013, which could in turn be triggered by EBITDA below the $90 million we

anticipate in our base case, owing to further manganese price declines, or

delays in the group's cost reduction plan, and the absence of timely capex

    adjustments.

We could revise the outlook to stable if ConsMin successfully executed its

program to cut cash costs, and returned to sustainable neutral-to-positive

FOCF based on manganese prices steadily above $5/dmtu.

Ouya developer console gets an official unboxing, flaunts transparent case (video)

It's a little early for an Ouya teardown, but Kickstarters who chipped in $699 won't have to wait long to see what the little console is made of -- Ouya's developer hardware is transparent. The console's team decided to cut the inevitable march of unboxing videos off at the neck, offering fans a quick preview of the package it's shipping out to devs. The standard accouterments are there -- the tiny console itself, two prototype controllers with batteries, HDMI and power adapters, plus a micro USB cord and a letter to developers thanking them for their investment and warning them of the early build's bugs. The note also cautions deep-pocketed gamers that the device is built specifically for developer use, and has no games to placate eager couch potatoes. The video shows the console booting up, and even demonstrates how easy it is to open the hardware. Skip on past the break to get a glimpse at what early adopters and developers are getting their hands on.

Dorcas Lane to surprise big names in London Road Chase Stayers at Romford

Dorcas Lane needs to track cleverly in the early stages to stamp her high-profile opponents in London Road Chase Stayers, taking place at Romford on Friday, December 28th. The black bitch is the sole participant with a fresh strike under her belt.

The J. Reynolds-trained returned to the open level in mid December, when finishing second to Head Iton Tom. Despite plenty of mess, the maverick bitch maintained the standards to ensure the runner-up place. She built on that, and sealed an amazing victory last time around.

Things looked very tricky in the beginning, as she got bumped at the first bend. By making smooth progress, the daughter of College Causeway, out of Droopys Geneva, established her supremacy at the sixth bend. By virtue of an outstanding finish, she claimed the victory by three lengths.

No one from the opposition is in good form at the moment. So, it is an ideal situation for Dorcas Lane to add another win to her tally. Among the rivals are: Rockview Sail, Bubbly Ebony, Millwards Daisy, Rebellious Mary, and Droopys Darwin. The 575 metres contest will be kicked off at 21:56 GMT. The winner will get a prize of 175 pounds.

Bubbly Ebony is more than capable of leaving previous form behind. The black dog, who was fourth in his last two encounters, is enjoying a favourable draw. Therefore, we expect him to bounce back and play a significant role.

Rockview Sail showed great improvement last time, when taking the runner-up place. The good result came after two embarrassing losses respectively at Nottingham and Romford. The blue dog is likely to show more this time.

Rebellious Mary must assert early, or her chance will evaporate. The black dog was third on her previous two outings. Droopys Darwin lacks a recent look round, and needs to show massive improvement to be competitive in this meeting.

The punters must not be fooled by Millwards Daisy?s recent figures. The white and black bitch is going through a lean patch at the moment. So, she needs a special effort to be successful. Good luck to all the hounds.

NOPD books man on child molestation, sexual battery charges ...

NOPD Child Abuse detectives arrested a man Monday accused of molesting a young girl who was left in his care, according to an arrest warrant. Damon Thomas, 25, was booked into the Orleans Parish jail on charges of sexual battery and molestation of a juvenile, records show.

The victim, a young girl, was left in Thomas' care at a house in the 2200 block of Piety Street about 11 a.m. on Monday. Thomas was the only adult in the house, according to the warrant.

The victim said she was watching TV in a bedroom with Thomas when he began to rub her arms, hands and "private parts," according to the warrant. The victim told police Thomas was "massaging her private part like a person massage a back," the warrant states.

Thomas was arrested in 2009 for molestation of a juvenile and carnal knowledge of a juvenile. He pled guilty to the latter charge, records show.

Thomas was being held Thursday in lieu of $52,500 bond, records show.

Stocks turn lower after consumer confidence sinks

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks fell Thursday, pushed down by unwelcome signs that the economy is still far from repaired and that "fiscal cliff" negotiations are far from sealed.

Major stock indexes wavered between small gains and losses in early trading, then turned decisively downward after 10 a.m. That was after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said it appears the government will miss the deadline for avoiding the "fiscal cliff," and the Conference Board reported that consumer confidence fell to its lowest level since August.

"An unpleasant surprise," was how Hugh Johnson, chairman and chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors in Albany, N.Y., described the consumer confidence numbers. "People are worried."

It was an uneasy sentiment already made obvious this week, with reports that the holiday shopping season so far has been the weakest since the financial crisis of 2008.

Washington's stagnating budget negotiations compounded the pessimism. President Barack Obama called Reid as well as Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to talk about the negotiations. Tax increases and government spending cuts kick in next week if Republicans and Democrats can't reach a budget compromise by Monday night.

Until recently, investors were treating the "fiscal cliff" with a measure of nonchalance. Stocks rose more or less steadily from mid-November until late last week. But now, with the deadline nearing and no deal in sight, uncertainty is rising. Thursday was the fourth straight day of stock declines in the U.S.

"This is a matter of a few personalities; it isn't something where you can analyze spreadsheets to figure out what's going on," said David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds. "There are very few investors on one side or the other who have wanted to make a strong bet on this one."

The Dow Jones industrial average fell as much as 104 points after the consumer confidence numbers were released. Shortly before 11:30 a.m. EST, it was down 92 points to 13,023.

The Standard & Poor's 500 was down 12 points to 1,408 and the Nasdaq composite index fell 20 points to 2,970.

Investors were unimpressed by scattered signs that the U.S. economy might be improving. The government reported that unemployment claims fell and sales of new homes rose.

"We've got lots of numbers out, and nobody's even talking about or thinking about the numbers," Johnson said. People can't take too much comfort in those reports, he said, when they "are worried about their jobs and worried about their incomes."

Chipmaker Marvell Technology Group dropped 3 percent, falling 21 cents to $7.19, after the company lost a patent case brought by Carnegie Mellon University. Marvell said it would fight the $1.2 billion ruling.

In Japan, the benchmark Nikkei 225 index rose to its highest close since March 2011. The country is preparing for the incoming, pro-business prime minister, Shinzo Abe. He has called for more public works spending to reinvigorate the economy, and measures to drag the country out of deflation, or steadily declining prices.

Hillary Clinton to return to work next week

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to return to work next week, almost three weeks after being sidelined by a concussion.

Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines says Clinton continues to recuperate at home and will resume her office schedule next week. He says Clinton had no schedule this week because of a long-planned holiday.

Aides and doctors say Clinton contracted a stomach virus in early December and became dehydrated, then fainted, fell and hit her head. She was diagnosed with a concussion on Dec. 13 and hasn't been seen in public since.

Clinton's illness led her to cancel an overseas trip and scheduled testimony before Congress about the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya.

Ouya releases SDK for $99 game console, shows off developer ...

Now that Ouya is shipping the first developer kits?of its upcoming $99 Android-based video game console, the company has opened a software developer portal, launched a software developer kit, and shown off an early preview of the user interface.

The Ouya team has also posted an unboxing video, giving us a good look at the first developer consoles.

What we?re looking at isn?t the finished hardware. While the developer kits have the same basic specs as the units that will ship to customers in April (including an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage), these special edition models have clear plastic cases.

That means you can see the guts of the Ouya game console without even opening it up ? and the same goes for the 2 wireless controllers that come with the kits.

Unfortunately the game controllers are still works in progress, and the team is still working out some of the kinks.

The developer kits also include microUSB ports that let you connect the system to a computer for Android programming and debugging. It?s not clear if the final product will have that port ? but one of the key goals of the Ouya project is to create an open platform, so I can?t see why the consumer device would ship without a microUSB port.

Meanwhile, folks interested in developing games for the Ouya who haven?t been able to snag one of the limited edition developer kits can check out the Developer Portal for details on coding for the Ouya using off-the-shelf hardware to test their games.

The Ouya is available for pre-order for $99 plus shipping, and it?s expected to ship in April, 2013.

Video shows woman pushing man in front of NYC subway train

NEW YORK (AP) ? A surveillance video of the woman suspected of pushing a man to his death in front of an oncoming subway train was released Friday by the New York Police Department.

It shows the woman running from the elevated platform in the Queens section of New York City Thursday night.

Witnesses told police she had been following the man closely and mumbling to herself. She got up from a nearby bench and shoved him as the train pulled into the platform.

It did not appear the man noticed her before he was shoved onto the tracks, police said, adding that the condition of the man's body was making it difficult to identify him.

The woman fled, and police were searching for her. She was described as Hispanic, in her 20s, heavyset and about 5-foot-5, wearing a blue, white and gray ski jacket and Nike sneakers with gray on top and red on the bottom.

It was unclear if the man and the woman knew each other or if anyone tried to help the man up before he was struck by the train and killed at the station on Queens Boulevard in the Sunnyside neighborhood.

It was the second time this month someone has been shoved to their death on subway tracks.

On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was pushed in front of a train in Times Square. A photograph of him on the tracks a split second before he was killed was published on the front of the New York Post the next day, causing an uproar and debate over whether the photographer, who had been waiting for a train, should have tried to help him and whether the newspaper should have run the image. Apparently no one else tried to help up Han, either.

A homeless man, 30-year-old Naeem Davis, was charged with murder in Han's death and was ordered held without bail. He has pleaded not guilty and has said that Han was the aggressor and had attacked him first. The two men hadn't met before.

Being pushed onto the train tracks is a silent fear for many of the commuters who ride the city's subway a total of more than 5.2 million times on an average weekday, but deaths are rare. Among the more high-profile cases was the January 1999 death of aspiring screenwriter Kendra Webdale, who was shoved by a former mental patient. After that, the state Legislature passed Kendra's Law, which lets mental health authorities supervise patients who live outside institutions to make sure they are taking their medications and aren't threats to safety.

sexy calendar to raise awareness of anal cancer | The Sun |Woman ...

THESE 12 sexy ladies have all stripped off for a rear-ly good cause ? to raise awareness of bottom cancer.

Ellie De Nardo, 22, put together the charity calendar after seeing her mum Jill battle the disease. Health worker Jill, 53, was diagnosed with anal cancer two years ago and received treatment at The Christie Hospital in Manchester.

    Ellie and Jill De Nardo

Support ... Ellie De Nardo watched her mum Jill battle the disease

Ellie, from Buxton, Derbyshire, persuaded her pals to get naked while her old schoolmate Rosie Hardy, 22, took the pictures. Ellie, a business studies graduate, said: ?If we make just a few people aware of this rare cancer, it will have all been worthwhile.?

Proceeds from the calendar ? available from behindcancercampaign.org.uk ? go to the Christie charity and the Human Papillomavirus and Anal Cancer Foundation in the UK.

    Meet the calendar girls below...

    January

SARAH JONES, 24, is Ellie?s sister-in-law from Derbyshire.

?Unfortunately many members of my family have been affected by cancer and not all have survived. I jumped at the chance to raise money for The Christie, a vital hospital where they treat those suffering from cancer and support them and their families.

?Making the calendar was fun and a way 12 normal girls could raise awareness.?

    February

PHOTOGRAPHER Rosie Hardy, 22, created the calendar and is a friend of Ellie?s from school.

She said: ?For most people the thought of taking your clothes off and posing naked is a daunting experience.

?But when you compare that to what cancer sufferers go through day to day, you realise it is nothing. So I just wanted to play my small part to raise awareness for this cause.?

    March

KATE BESWICK, 20, is a student and a good friend of Ellie?s from Buxton, Derbyshire.

She said: ?When Ellie asked me to take part in the calendar, I automatically agreed because I knew it was for such a good and important cause.

?It is so important that people raise awareness of rare cancers and hopefully this great calendar has been a very positive way of achieving that aim.?

    April

TORIE CHAPMAN, 21, a school friend of Ellie?s, is a wedding and events planner in Derbyshire.

She said: ?My best mate?s mum got cancer and I wanted to do anything that I could to help out with Ellie?s project.

?The Christie hospital has done some truly amazing work for cancer sufferers and their families.

?The more we know about this disease and how to cure it, the better.?

    May

LAURA MORRIS, 20, a pal of Ellie?s from Buxton, is studying PE at Leeds Metropolitan University.

She said: ?My cousin was diagnosed with cancer when she was only 18 months old so I know how this impacts on a family. She is 53 now and fit and well, but without the research into all the types of cancer, she may not have survived.

?Doing the calendar was a little bit scary, but well worth it.?

NATASHA McGAREY has been Ellie?s best friend since she was four years old. She is currently studying business at The University of West England.

Natasha, 22, said: ?I wanted to help my friend and her family any way I could and the calendar is a great way to get the message across.

?After visiting the Christie with Ellie I saw how many different ages are affected by cancer, and the Christie really deserves recognition.?

    July

AMY SELBY, 20, is Ellie?s friend and is studying at the University of Derby.

She said: ?Having family members who have been affected by cancer, I chose to take part to take an active part in raising money for the cause.

?I have to admit that posing naked in front of a camera was a little bit nerve-wracking for me, but doing it all with 11 friends made the whole experience a very fun one for everyone.?

    August

GABY TYLER, 20, another Buxton-based pal of Ellie?s, is studying English literature at the University of Sheffield.

She said: ?My dad was treated for a malignant melanoma at the Christie and they were great with him throughout his treatment, so I really wanted to help.

?The calendar was a very fun and different way of raising money and getting people talking.

?I hope it did its job of raising awareness of this rare cancer.?

    September

ELLIE said: ?My mum is the strongest and bravest person I know ? but even she has had her weak moments throughout all of this, which is why I did this special project for her.

?With the help of some local businesses, we managed to raise enough money to fund the production of the calendars to ensure that every single penny goes straight to the Christie hospital, which is an amazing place.?

    October

AMY SMITH, 34, from Derby, is Ellie?s cousin and works as a sales manager.

She said: ?It?s not every day you get asked to get your clothes off for charity but when Ellie told me about her idea I didn?t hesitate to say yes.

?In the past few years both my mum and aunty have been diagnosed.

?Doing this calendar made me feel like I can help. If one more person is checked out because of us then we?ve done something very positive.?

    November

LAURA SAVILE, 21, is another pal of Ellie?s from her home town. She is studying sports business management at Leeds Metropolitan University.

She said: ?In 2001, my mum was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and was treated at the Christie, where the cancer was successfully removed.

?Luckily skin cancers are easily detected. This is why raising awareness for lesser known ones, like anal cancer, is vital.?

    December

ABI HUTTON, 22, a school mate of Ellie?s, is studying Textile Design at Manchester Metropolitan University.

She said: ?When I was about eight years old my grandma lost her battle with cancer, so I was determined to help Ellie with this campaign.

?On a happier note, I really enjoyed taking part. On the day of the shoot there was a few nervous faces but it was nothing a cheeky glass of champagne couldn?t fix.?

Las Vegas police investigate discovery of girl's body

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) ? Police investigating the week-old disappearance of a 10-year-old Las Vegas girl said Thursday they think they found the child's body in an undeveloped housing tract in North Las Vegas.

Authorities couldn't immediately confirm the body was Jade Morris pending positive identification and notification of family members by the Clark County coroner, Las Vegas police homicide Capt. Chris Jones said.

But, "I can tell you that the likelihood is that this is our victim," Jones said.

He also said that the body belongs to a black girl.

Coroner Michael Murphy said he did not expect positive identification until Friday.

Jade was last seen by her family at about 5 p.m. Dec. 21 when Brenda Stokes picked her up for a shopping outing, police said. Police said Stokes was a trusted friend of the girl's father, and family members have told reporters that the two dated for several years.

Stokes, who also uses the name Brenda Wilson, was later arrested after she was accused of slashing a co-worker with razor blades at the Bellagio resort casino.

Stokes, 50, is now in jail and Jones said she has not cooperated in the investigation about the girl's whereabouts.

A passer-by called 911 about noon Thursday, and North Las Vegas police found a girl's body in unkempt brush near palm trees in a small traffic circle near Dorrell Lane and North 5th Street.

The location is a short distance from the northern 215 Beltway and about 10 miles from the downtown Las Vegas outlet mall off Interstate 15 where Stokes was to have taken the girl shopping.

Attempts by The Associated Press to reach family members on Thursday were unsuccessful.

Stokes picked up the girl about 5 p.m., and two hours later returned to another friend the red 2007 Saab sedan that she borrowed for the shopping trip, Jones said.

Later, Stokes got a ride with a friend to the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip, where she was arrested after allegedly attacking a female co-worker, Joyce Rhone, with a razor in each hand as Rhone dealt blackjack about 9:30 p.m.

Rhone, 44, was hospitalized with deep cuts on her face, including one from her ear to the edge of her mouth. A police arrest report said Rhone also had several smaller cuts around her right eye.

Records show that Stokes was being held Thursday on $60,000 bail at the Clark County jail on felony battery with a weapon, burglary and mayhem charges that could get her decades in prison.

She told a judge Wednesday that she had not obtained a lawyer. She was due again in Las Vegas Justice Court on Friday.

The arrest report says casino video shows Stokes attacking Rhone before a casino patron and security officers intervene. Officer Marcus Martin said the video is evidence that may be shown by prosecutors in court but will not be made public by police.

Police said Stokes later told investigators that she attacked Rhone over harassing phone calls and an unspecified betrayal that ended their seven-year friendship.

Stokes also told police she visited her doctor last week, seeking to be admitted to a hospital "due to feeling like she wanted to hurt someone."

She is reported to have told investigators she hadn't taken a prescription anti-anxiety drug on Friday, and that, "Sometimes people just snap."
