Lingualia

Lingualia (free) is something of a newcomer to the language-learning arena, but it's a very compelling program if your needs just happen fit what it offers. For starters, it only teaches two languages: Spanish (for English speakers) and English (for Spanish speakers), although it does have a placement test that starts you out on the appropriate level, which I rarely see in free programs. Second, Lingualia is heavier than many language-learning software programs on reading and old-fashioned grammar, which may or may not suit your needs. Finally, Lingualia is only available on the Web and in an iPhone app, and in both instances, you have to have an Internet connection to use it. But it's free, and that's a pretty big deal.

Some learning programs, such as Rosetta Stone version 4 TOTALe and Fluenz cost a hundred bucks or more per unit. Among free language-learning apps, only one I've tested has been exceptional, and that's Duolingo, a site I continue to use in my personal life. Duolingo has more languages than Linguaglia?French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, and English?and it pushes you to speak and translate, too, which Linguaglia does not. But in Duolingo, you can't easily jump ahead to an appropriate level. You can only test out of each level one at a time. Lingualia's placement test simply starts you where you need to begin.

Lingualia's content is fairly compelling, with many reading excerpts drawn from real-world Web pages. For example, one exercise had me reading in Spanish about the different types of outdoor tourism across Spain's various regions. That material is a lot more interesting that the kind of learning that's restricted to single words and single sentences. It does suffer from some repetition, as most language-learning software does. And it does not include any speaking/voice-recognition modules. The emphasis is much more on reading. Come to think of it, I never came across any writing exercises either?only a few exercises in which I recreated a sentence by ordering words that were provided, or spelling short words and phrases from a list of provided letters. Overall, it might be a good way for English speakers to learn or improve their Spanish, but it depends on what areas of the language you need to practice.

The Lingualia Program
To use Lingualia, you need an account, which takes little more than signing up with an email address and password, or authenticating through Facebook. You'll be asked whether you want to learn Spanish or English (or both), and during setup, you can also create a user profile with as much or as little detail as you care to share.

From that point, you can either opt into any one of Linguaglia's levels of study (A1 being the beginner level), or take a placement test that will determine the starting point that's right for you. I took the Spanish test and landed in the A2 level, which turned out to have more challenging material than I would have expected.

The first two times I tried to take the placement test, however, I hit a snag. The audio failed to play on both a Mac and Windows computer. This stopped me in my tracks because a few of the testing questions rely on you listening to a spoken word and choosing from a list which word was spoken. The third time I tried Lingualia's placement test, I had no problems and have had none since with the audio. I'll chalk it up to a bad day.

Once you enroll in a course level, you can't add more levels in that same language, so you can't dabble in the different levels. In many ways I think this is the right way to handle a learning program, as it's much more distracting and confusing for me if I can skip around, as Keewords.com (free) lets you do.

From there on out, you work through the exercises as they are presented to you. Units comprise about five lessons, and each lesson takes somewhere on the order of 10 to 20 minutes to complete, depending on your abilities. At the end of the unit, you have to pass a checkpoint to move forward. The checkpoint contains a number of exercises you've already completed in the lessons, but I often found minor changes to the questions or answer sets that kept me on my toes. For example, I read the same paragraph about whether Spain should allow segregation between boys and girls in school at the high school level, but the question I was asked to answer about this paragraph changed, so it wasn't just a matter of me having to recall the previous answer. I actually had to read the paragraph a second time to make sure I was getting the right information for the question at hand.

Some of the exercises aren't as well structured as those in Duolingo. For example, Duolingo lets you replay any audio clip at a slower speed, and when you do that, the narrator more clearly pauses between distinct words to help you parse whatever you cannot understand. In Lingualia, the audio always plays at the same speed, with no option to slow it down. On the other hand, Duolingo's audio clips are an automated, robotic voice, whereas Lingualia has recorded human voices, with varying accents and all.

When I practice my language skills in Duolingo, I spend a lot of time writing, whereas Lingualia emphasizes reading to a much greater extent. In fact, the only writing I've done in Lingualia has been to piece together words from a suggested batch of letters, or sentences from a suggested batch of words. Similar exercises appear in Living Language Platinum and the Living Language iPad app, and in all these instances, I really missed typing. Duolingo does has a few of these same "piece together a sentence" exercises, but it appears more commonly in its Duolingo mobile apps, where typing is tougher due to having a smaller screen. The Duolingo Web app actually asks you to write.

I do like that Lingualia has actually challenged me, though. I found the readings in particular pushed me to figure out meaning through context more than straight translations look-ups. I also like that in the A2 level Lingualia keeps almost all of its instructions and explanatory text in Spanish, too. The immersion has benefited me tremendously.

Community
Lingualia offers some community aspects, too, although I did not find anyone who seemed to be using them much. The community engagement seems low. I found users who, like me, were studying Spanish? and started following a few of them, but only one person had made any progress on her course at all.

One neat feature that I would love to see get more use is a "challenge" module, in which you compete against other learners to complete exercises accurately and quickly (the regular content does not put any time limits on how quickly you must answer questions). I opted to play an asynchronous session against a "ghost" opponent, but one has yet to be found. Seeing as the community isn't really active, I would like to see more independent games and additional modules included that allow for more independent exploration beyond the core lessons.

Lingualia Dos and Don'ts
Do use Lingualia if you are an English speaker looking to study Spanish, but don't rely on it solely as your only source of practice. I think it actually makes for a nice complement to Duolingo, our Editors' Choice for free language-learning, because of how it brings in more contextual reading, while Duolingo fills in the content that Lingualia misses?a strong community aspect, speaking exercises, and writing exercises. If you're looking for a program that holds you hand through the paces a bit more, you may need to pay for something more, in which case I recommend Rosetta Stone or Rocket Languages Premium.

Apple Says It Will Audit One Of Its Chinese Production Facilities Following Report On Horrible Working Conditions (AAPL)

?

Apple has responded to a harsh report from China Labor Watch today that says conditions at one of Apple's manufacturing facilities are really bad for workers.

The CLW report specifically focuses on Pegatron, one of the facilities where some Apple products are made. It criticizes the facility for having poor working conditions and forcing employees to work overtime without pay.

The report is based on interviews with Pegatrong employees.?You can read the whole thing here.

In the statement, Apple says it has audited Pegatron several times and the average work week for an employee there is 46 hours.?

Apple also confirmed that Pegatron withheld ID badges from some employees and demanded the practice be stopped.

As for the other claims in the CLW report, Apple says many are new, but will be following up on each with an audit.

Here's Apple's statement, as reported by The Wall Street Journal:

Apple is committed to providing safe and fair working conditions throughout our supply chain. We lead the industry with far-reaching and specialized audits, the most transparent reporting and educational programs that enrich the lives of workers who make our products. Apple is the first and only technology company to be admitted to the Fair Labor Association, and we are dedicated to protecting every worker in our supply chain.

As a part of our extensive Supplier Responsibility program, Apple has conducted 15 comprehensive audits at Pegatron facilities since 2007, covering more than 130,000 workers making Apple products including annual audits of Pegatron?s final assembly locations and surprise audits at both RiTeng and AVY within the past 18 months.

Additionally, we have closely tracked working hours at all of these facilities. Our most recent survey in June found that Pegatron employees making Apple products worked 46 hours per week on average. Excessive overtime is not in anyone?s best interest, and we work closely with our suppliers to prevent it. Apple surveys working hours for more than 1 million employees across our supply chain each month and we report the findings on our website.

We have been in close contact with China Labor Watch for several months, investigating issues they?ve raised and sharing our findings. When they first told us that workers? ID cards were being withheld, an auditor from our Supplier Responsibility program was on site the next day to investigate. We confirmed that labor brokers for Pegatron were holding a small number of IDs as they helped set up bank accounts for those employees. We demanded Pegatron put a stop to this practice and a new system was in place within a week.

Their latest report contains claims that are new to us and we will investigate them immediately. Our audit teams will return to Pegatron, RiTeng and AVY for special inspections this week. If our audits find that workers have been underpaid or denied compensation for any time they?ve worked, we will require that Pegatron reimburse them in full.

Our audits involve a thorough review of timecards and other documents to guard against falsification. We will investigate these new claims thoroughly, ensure that corrective actions are taken where needed and report any violations of our code of conduct. We will not tolerate deviations from our code.

Apple believes in transparency and accountability, both for our suppliers and ourselves. We realize being a leader in workers rights and being transparent with our findings opens us to criticism, but we believe strongly that we can make a big difference in the lives of millions of people by doing so and this provides us the courage and resilience to continue the journey. We are proud of the work we do with our suppliers to uncover problems and improve conditions for workers. By vigorously enforcing our supplier code of conduct, we ensure that our suppliers follow the same principles and values we hold true.

Robin Thicke: 'Blurred Lines' like 'great art'

Performances

You can run, but you can't hide from "Blurred Lines," the song that has turned out to be the surprise hit of Summer 2013. The song spent 7 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, while also generating a certain amount of controversy for its lyrics.

Thicke took the plaza's stage (holding a shiny gold microphone) to sing the tune, along with "Take It Easy On Me" and to chat with TODAY's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday. Oh, and they also addressed the debate over the song's lyrics.

"When we made the song we had nothing but the most respect for women," said the 36-year-old singer, who releases his sixth album, also called "Blurred Lines," on Tuesday.

"I've been with the same woman since I was a teenager," he added. "Sometimes the lyrics can get misconstrued when you're just trying to put people on the dance floor and have a good time. But we had no idea it would stir this much controversy.... We only had the best intentions."

Anyway, he says, controversy is good: "That's what great art does, it's supposed to stir conversation, it's supposed to make us talk about what's important."

Well, whether you think "Blurred Lines" is "great art" or not, it sure is a catchy tune. Be sure to check out the videos of Thicke's performances from TODAY and the great tweets, Vines and Instagrams from our fans and TODAY anchors.

Weiner's campaign manager in NY mayoral race quits

(AP) ? Anthony Weiner vowed to stay in the race for New York City mayor Sunday despite the loss of his campaign manager and the drumbeat of critics questioning his fitness for public office.

"We have an amazing staff, but this isn't about the people working on the campaign. It's about the people we're campaigning for," Weiner said after speaking at a Brooklyn church.

Weiner confirmed that campaign manager Danny Kedem resigned Saturday after reports surfaced that Weiner continued to exchange lewd photos and messages with women despite resigning from Congress in 2011 over the same behavior.

Weiner said he would keep talking about "ideas for the middle class and people struggling to make it every single day" and added, "We knew this was going to be a tough campaign."

Kedem had managed the re-election of John DeStefano Jr. to a 10th term as mayor of New Haven in 2011 and worked on Hillary Clinton's failed 2008 presidential campaign.

The 31-year-old Kedem was credited with helping Weiner pull into the lead among the crowded field of Democratic primary candidates before the latest revelations about Weiner's raunchy online exchanges with women.

Rival mayoral candidate Christine Quinn, speaker of the New York City Council, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Weiner has shown "a pattern of reckless behavior, an inability to tell the truth and a real lack of maturity and responsibility."

Unlike other candidates who have urged Weiner to end his campaign, Quinn said opponents should not "say who should or shouldn't get in and out of races."

But she questioned whether he is the right person to lead the city.

"Has he disqualified himself? Yes, he's disqualified himself," Quinn said. "But not just because of these scandals, though that certainly has. He didn't have the qualifications when he was in Congress."

Later on the NBC program, former President Barack Obama senior adviser David Axelrod accused Weiner of "wasting time and space." Axelrod, who noted that his former firm is working for another mayoral candidate, said Americans "believe in second chances, but not third chances."

On CNN's "State of the Union," Republican U.S. Rep. Peter King, the target of a blistering 2010 attack from Weiner over a bill to provide free medical services for World Trade Center recovery workers, said Weiner is "not psychologically qualified to be mayor of the city of New York."

Weiner was forced to discuss his online behavior this past week after a gossip website printed excerpts of conversations Weiner had with Indiana college student Sydney Leathers last summer.

With his wife, Huma Abedin, alongside, Weiner apologized and promised that the "behavior is behind me." He later admitted that he traded racy messages with at least three women since leaving office.

He vowed to stay in the race, saying he believed "people care more about their futures than my past with my wife and my embarrassing things."

Quinn led the race before Weiner jumped in but slipped behind him in most polls over the past two months. But a one-day poll conducted after Weiner's latest revelations has Quinn leading Weiner in the race for the Democratic nomination. The mayoral primary is Sept. 10, and the general election is Nov. 5. The primary winner needs to get at least 40 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff with the No. 2 vote-getter.

William Eimicke, a Columbia University professor of public management who has held New York City and New York state government posts, said the defection of his campaign manager could cripple Weiner's campaign.

"I think he's toast!" Eimicke said in an email.

But veteran city political consultant Bob Liff discounted the effect of the resignation.

"I don't know that the campaign manager makes that much of a difference," Liff said. "I wouldn't write anybody out."

Perseid meteor shower: Coming soon to a sky near you

For Northern Hemisphere observers, the latter half of July on into August is usually regarded as "meteor viewing season," with one of the best displays of the year reaching its peak in mid-August.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is beloved by everyone from meteor enthusiasts to summer campers, and 2013 will be an excellent one for the Perseids. The moon will set before midnight on the peak nights of Aug. 11 and 12, meaning dark skies for prospective observers. [See Amazing Perseid Meteor Shower Photos of 2012]

This week, however, let's concentrate on some of the lesser-known summer meteor displays.?

In general, Earth encounters richer meteoric activity during the second half of the year, and stargazers are more likely to see twice as many meteors per hour in the predawn hours as compared with the evening hours. During the premidnight hours, the United States is on the "trailing" side of the Earth due to our orbital motion through space. Any meteoric particle generally must have an orbital velocity greater than that of the Earth to "catch" the planet.

After midnight, when the United States is ?turned onto the Earth's "leading" side, any particle that lies along the Earth's orbital path will enter the planet's atmosphere as a meteor.? As such, objects collide with the atmosphere at speeds of 7 to 45 miles per second (11 to 17.7 kilometers per second), their energy of motion rapidly dissipates in the form of heat, light, and ionization, creating short-lived streaks of light popularly referred to as "shooting stars."

Summertime meteors, occasionally flitting across your line of sight, are especially noticeable between mid-July and the third week of August. Between Aug. 3 and 15, there are no fewer than six different active minor displays. These six meteor showers are listed in the table below.

The actual number of meteors a single observer can see in an hour depends strongly on sky conditions, but the only equipment you'll need to see them are your eyes and a modest amount of patience.

The rates given in the table are based on a limited star magnitude of +6.5 (considered to be the faintest star visible to the naked eye without the use of binoculars or a telescope), an experienced observer, and an assumption that the radiant is directly overhead.

The radiant is the place in the sky where the paths of meteors, if extended backward, would intersect when plotted on a star chart.? Your clenched fist held at arm's length is equal to roughly 10 degrees on the sky.? So if the radiant is 30 degrees ("three-fists") above the horizon, the hourly rate is halved; at 15 degrees, it is one-third.

While the hourly rates from these other meteor streams provide but a fraction of the numbers produced by the Perseids, combined, overall they provide a wide variety of meteors of differing colors, speeds and trajectories.?

China Property a Tough Real Estate Bubble to Pop - Matthews Asia

I recently came across an old newspaper article from February 1989 that described Beijing?s residential property "bubble," with average selling prices then of about US$430 to US$510 per square meter. The article went on to say that, given that the average college-educated worker typically saved less than approximately US$13 per month, at those prices, it would take a century or so to be able to buy a two-bedroom apartment. The writer concluded that a housing bubble was underway.

These days, the official average Beijing home price has reached a new high of approximately US$3,800 per square meter (or about US$246,000 for a small one-bedroom apartment) despite strict home purchase restrictions. In terms of affordability, consider that last year, China?s average annual take home pay per person for urban households was approximately US$3,900. China's property bubble has been a hot topic probably ever since the beginning of the country's commodity housing development. But despite some compelling arguments and striking examples that a bubble does exist, China's property market has generally remained robust. So, is its property market really in a bubble? If so, why has the bubble lasted so long?

Real estate in the country?s urban areas is expensive by traditional metrics. But the average income has also more than tripled over the past decade. While true wages may not continue to grow at double-digit rates, by the same token, it may be too soon to jump to the conclusion that there is a real estate bubble while incomes continue to shift upward.

No doubt that China has some poorly planned large-scale projects developed. Like the U.S., China is a vast country filled with many contradicting examples. Observers could reach opposing conclusions about the U.S. property market by narrowing in on areas such as San Francisco or Detroit. To generalize about China?s market can be equally misleading.

In previous commentaries on China?s housing market, we have noted that the typical down payment requirement for first time home buyers is a hefty 30%, and usually 60% for a second home. Unlike in the U.S., mortgage loans in China are recourse loans. As a result, a homeowner cannot expect that any remaining debt can be forgiven should he or she not be able to continue payments. So the systemic risks are very different than those the U.S. faced in recent years.

So what factors have underpinned the property bull market over the years? The main driving force for the development of property market has been actual demand for urbanization and home upgrades. Some investors are really concerned over the rate at which people in China may be buying multiple properties for investment. Chinese are famous for having high savings rate?as high as about 50%. However, the country?s investment alternatives are currently limited, and low bank rates have meant that keeping money in the bank has been a sure way to lose purchasing power. China?s domestic equity markets are also notoriously volatile. In addition, given the steady appreciation of China?s currency, the renminbi (RMB), over the past decade, the incentive for investing in RMB assets has become more appealing. Buying real estate, therefore, has been one of the few alternatives available for people to preserve wealth and purchasing power, especially in light of the typically low costs incurred for housing investments, or carrying costs. In China, so far only two cities, Shanghai and Chongqing, have implemented experimental property tax programs. The low carrying costs also help explain why some flats sit vacant?the need to find rental income is much less pressing than it might be in the U.S. where you have to cover higher mortgage costs and property taxes.

Although China?s property market certainly exhibits some bubble symptoms on the surface, the root cause seems deeply embedded in China's economic growth and financial system. The government has proposed different measures over the years to tackle property inflation, but the efforts have been largely unsuccessful as they only temporarily suppress the symptoms. With continued wage growth and urbanization, China's property market may be a tough "bubble" to pop.

Obama and McCain: Washington's newest odd couple

WASHINGTON (AP) -- There was no conciliatory phone call, no heart-to-heart talk to soothe the tensions. No one knows exactly when President Barack Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain went from bitter rivals in the 2008 presidential campaign and foes over health care and national security to bipartisan partners.

Yet in recent months, an alignment on high-profile domestic issues - not to mention an eye on their respective legacies - has transformed Obama and McCain into Washington's most unexpected odd couple. The Arizona senator is a regular visitor to the West Wing and in near-daily contact with senior White House officials.

McCain, in an Associated Press interview, said that he and Obama "trust each other." White House chief of staff Denis McDonough, among the Obama advisers who speak regularly with McCain, praised the lawmaker as a "refreshing" partner who "welcomes a debate and welcomes action."

Like any good business arrangement in the nation's capital, the secret to the new Obama-McCain alliance ultimately comes down to this: Both sides believe that working together is mutually beneficial and carries little political risk.

For Obama, the senator has become a rare Republican backer of important elements on the president's second term agenda, including immigration overhaul, stricter background checks for gun buyers, and perhaps a fall budget deal.

In return, McCain has secured increased access to the White House and an opportunity to redeem his reputation as a Capitol Hill "maverick." That image was tainted when McCain tacked to the right during his failed 2008 presidential run against Obama.

"I've told the people of Arizona, I will work with any president if there are ways I can better serve Arizona and the country," McCain said. "That seems to be an old-fashioned notion but it's the case."

Indeed, the level of attention lavished on a functional working relationship between the Democratic president and the Republican senator underscores how rare such partnerships have been during Obama's tenure.

Lawmakers, including some Democrats, long have chafed at Obama's distant dealings with Capitol Hill and his supposed lack of understanding about how Congress operates.

It's unlikely that Obama and McCain's partnership will lead to a larger detente between the White House and congressional Republicans. While McCain may have sway over some like-minded members of the Senate Republican caucus, he has considerably less influence with his party's more conservative wing, particularly in the GOP-controlled House.

Still, the White House is hopeful that forging policy breakthroughs with McCain and other Senate Republicans will isolate the House GOP and perhaps persuade them to act.

The first test of that strategy probably will be the White House-backed immigration overhaul. McCain helped write and shepherd the bill through the Senate last month. Its future in the House is deeply uncertain.

The administration also will try to work with McCain ahead of impending budget battles, McDonough said, given that the senator and the White House agree there is a negative impact from across-the-board federal budget cuts, particularly on the military and defense industry.

McDonough said it's not just a shared view on policy that has made McCain an attractive partner to Obama on these and other issues. It's their mutual disdain for Washington meetings that never move beyond the standard talking points.

"Part of what's great to work with him is his impatience with that," McDonough said. "You can kind of get into the meat of the matter very quickly"

Obama and McCain were never close during the president's brief tenure in the Senate. While McCain is a creature of Capitol Hill, Obama largely saw Congress as a stepping stone to bigger things. The relationship deteriorated during frequent clashes in the 2008 presidential campaign, and it often appeared during Obama's first term like it would never recover.

In 2010, the two sparred during a televised negotiating session on health care. McCain chastised Obama for brokering deals behind closed doors, to which the president snapped, "We're not campaigning anymore. The election is over."

McCain replied: "I'm reminded of that every day."

White House advisers still bristle over McCain's accusations that the administration covered up details of last year's deadly attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, as well as his relentless criticism of former U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice's role in that alleged effort.

McCain's criticism contributed to Rice's decision to withdraw from consideration as Obama's secretary of state. She now serves as White House national security adviser, a post that does not require Senate confirmation.

McDonough acknowledged that McCain's role in keeping the Benghazi controversy alive has been a source of frustration. But he credited the senator with largely shelving his criticism of Rice once she joined the White House staff.

"The way he's worked with her since she became national security adviser speaks to his interest in making sure that even where we disagree, we're finding a way to work together when we can," McDonough said. "I know the president has appreciated that."

McCain said his stronger ties with the president on domestic issues won't keep him from challenging the president on national security issues, including Syria, where McCain backs a more aggressive U.S. response than does the administration. But he said there's a way to strike an appropriate balance.

"He is the president of the United States," McCain said. "You can strongly disagree and still be respectful."

Costs vs. Positive aspects of Managed Server HostingMany organizations begin their on-line venture with the decision of whether to buy and host their personal server, or use managed server hosting. Fundamentally, managed server hosting signifies that a hosting company manages your server(s) for you. In other words, you are renting a server from the hosting business. What are the fees of managed server hosting? Are the dangers low sufficient and the benefits high enough to make the value proper?nnThere are many possible benefits to employing managed server hosting:nnScalability ? Bandwidth wants fluctuate according to advertising and consumer patterns, as nicely as unforeseen, at times bizarre, events. With managed server hosting, you can upgrade or downgrade your bandwidth as necessary simply by letting your hosting provider know your needs. This allows you to use the host?s staff and sources, rather than hiring extra employees as would be necessary if you handled your personal hosting.nnEquipment ? With managed hosting, you are just renting the host?s equipment. As new technology becomes available, your host upgrades and you continue renting. If you are handling your personal server, you have to acquire the equipment your self. A server and communications gear, which includes special routers if required, fees among $ five,000 and $ 15,000.nnSupport ? Your managed hosting provider will take care of all support functions for your server. This contains monitoring servers, repairing hardware failures or network problems, and backup power supplies for the servers. Hosts also supply bandwidth and connectivity to the world wide web, as effectively safety supplies as server backup must your server fail. Numerous hosting businesses also offer you the alternative of periodic information backup as an added precaution against data loss or corruption.nnSecurity ? Your host will take care of installing essential firewalls and server monitoring gear to assist safeguard against viruses, denial of service attacks, and unauthorized access.nnIn addition to the list of rewards talked about, 1 of the major rewards of employing managed server hosting is time. Every single service provided by the host is a service that would have to be covered by your employees if you were to handle your personal server. In modest- to medium-sized companies, where staff and sources are usually restricted, the time spent managing the server could lead to a loss of time actually operating the organization and its day-to-day operations.nnThe option to losing time and production would be to hire added employees particularly for the server management, which could nicely cost more than the revenue from the internet site. Other costs associated with maintaining your personal server are acquiring communications, usually in the type of T1 lines, firewalls and safety tools, and a physical place for the server. In all, the costs for purchasing and keeping your own server for the first year usually variety from $ 58,000 to $ 107,000, with annual costs of $ 50,000 to $ one hundred,000 after that. Again, modest- and medium-sized firms would be the ones to locate this the most difficult to cover.nnAs with something, there are a couple of risks to employing managed server hosting:nnSensitive information ? Hosts assure the safety of the information on your site, but they can?t guarantee that they will never ever have an employee violate your trust and access sensitive material. They also can not guarantee that absolutely nothing will ever occur to that material. If you are going to have a huge quantity of sensitive info stored on the server, managed hosting might not be the best option for you. While maintaining your personal server will not assure the security of your data, it does give you the peace of mind of obtaining it beneath your handle.nnFraud ? There have been circumstances of hosting providers loading customer?s bills with hidden charges. This is not a frequent practice, but it has happened. Anybody who is considering managed server hosting must take the time to analysis the provider just before signing a contract.nnOnce you have weighed the risks and advantages of employing managed server hosting, it is time to consider the charges of the service.nnMonthly costs for hosting vary by provider. Most security supplies provide hosting packages, providing a distinct size server, specified bandwidth, and a variety of alternatives. The size of your organization and the cause for your website will make a distinction in the certain services you pick. If you are interested in additional options, such as safety certificates for delivering safe ordering pages or information backup performed by the host, you will incur additional costs. The standard price for a hosting service is normally $ 1,500 to $ 5,000 per year, which is significantly significantly less than the price of obtaining your own server.nnObviously, the expense for using managed server hosting is a fraction of the cost of buying and managing your own server. For modest- and medium-sized companies, managed server hosting is the easiest, least high-priced way to have a site. Even big businesses who do not want the added duty of servers and technical employees can benefit from managed hosting.nnCourtesy of: American Data Technologies, Inc. Vaja Executive Leather Top Flip Case and Top SP Striped Flip Case for iPhone 5 review

vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-1

Vaja Cases?have a reputation for beautiful, well-made leather cases and covers. ?Until recently, I had never gotten to try a Vaja case for myself, and my first experience was with the beautiful Nouva Pelle case for iPhone 5. ?I was also lucky enough to recently receive some other Vaja iPhone 5 cases. ?Two of them ? the?Top SP Striped Case, a striped flip cover for iPhone 5, and the?Top Flip Case, an?Executive Leather flip cover for iPhone 5 ? are very much alike, so I?ll be covering them both in one review. ?Let?s give them a look.

Click any image for a bigger view.

vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-2Both cases came with a tan-colored pouch to protect the case when you stuff your iPhone into a pocket or gear bag. ?I photographed only one, because both look exactly like this. The case seems to be constructed of a lightly-textured suede. ?It definitely has a rich leather smell, but I can?t tell if the material is natural leather or an engineered leather. ?The stitching is even and straight and color-matched to the suede. ?A Vaja label is sewn into the one side of the case; I don?t like labels that stick out like this because they can scratch my skin or get snagged in my clothing.

The open flaps at the top make it easier to reach in and grab the phone. ?The flaps completely cover the front and back of the case, so it?s protected from scratches in your bag.

vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-3vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-3aBoth cases are hand-made of premium leathers. ?They both come in some standard, ready-to-ship colors, and both can be customized in your color choices. ?The only branding on either is a small metal Vaja logo attached near the bottom of the front flap. ?Both cases are stiffened and structured, but I?m not sure what type of strengthening material is encased between the leather pieces.

The Striped Flip Cover is made from a ?single piece of striped Argentinian Floater leather and features an embossed Caterina leather interior.? ?I received the case in True Blue & Birch. ?The Executive Leather Flip Cover has a Caterina leather exterior and embossed interior. ?I received the London brown case. ?The blue leather seems to be a bit shinier than the brown leather.

Something that?s completely invisible but useful are the magnets embedded in the top edges of both the front flap and the back shell. ?These magnets hold the case closed without needing any flaps, straps, or snaps.

Because both cases are so similar, I decided I?d try out the striped case for a couple of weeks and asked my husband, Butch, to try out the brown case for the same amount of time.

vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-4vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-4aThe backs of both cases look very similar. ?There?s a large cutout for the back camera, and a metal badge with the Vaja name and logo attaching the front flap to the back.

vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-5The interiors are lined with leather pieces that are embossed with diagonal lines of the Vaja name and logo. ?Look closely at the front flap, and you?ll see a small piece of screen. ?This covers an opening in the inner hard shell, leaving only the screen and a single piece of leather covering the iPhone 5?s upper ear piece. ?If you don?t mind getting skin oils and makeup (for some of the ladies) on the leather exterior, you can even take calls through a closed case.

You also will notice the ?neck? of leather that attaches the front flap to the back shell. ?You won?t ever have to worry about losing the front cover of this case.

vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-6The camera opening is more than big enough to expose the camera lens and flash and the noise-reducing microphone located between them. ?I didn?t notice any flash flare when using the camera while my iPhone was in this case.

vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-7When you receive a call, you can open the case and let the front flap hang down as you talk. ?It was surprisingly easy to use the phone this way. ?The leather flap on the Executive Leather Top Flip Case was a little softer and more flexible than that on the Top SP Striped Flip Case, but after a little ?exercise?, the blue leather was just as flexible as the brown. ?If you don?t like the flap hanging down like that, you can fold it completely behind the phone, and it will fit easily into your hand.

I had one of my famous 3-hour calls with my friend, Leah, while my phone was in this case. ?I found the iPhone was very easy to hold and use in this case. ?Part of the time, I had the flap hanging down and folded behind the rest of the the time. ?Neither seemed more comfortable than the other, but it was nice to vary the hold to give my hand a change of grip.

vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-8Here you see the sides of the iPhone 5 in the cases. ?The side with the SIM drawer is completely covered by the back shell at all times. ?If you need to access that drawer, you?ll need to take the iPhone out of the case. ?The Mute slider and the volume buttons are exposed and easy to use, even when the front flap is closed.

vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-9The bottom flap completely covers the Lightning connector when closed. ?You can charge the phone in this case only if you leave the front cover open. ?The earphone connector is left open for use, and the case leaves part of the bottom speakers uncovered. ?The bottom microphone is covered by this case. ?I did not try a call with the front flap closed ? I?ve seen how my screen looks after a call! ? so I don?t know how muffled the bottom mic would be during a closed-cover call.

The power/sleep button at the top is impossible to use with the front flap closed. ?I had to push the case open a bit to get my finger in there. ?That opening is a great finger grip for opening the case, though. ?The magnets aren?t so strong that you feel you need a pry bar to open the case, but they do hold the front and back together well enough you need to be able to wedge your finger in there to easily open the front cover.

vaja-flip-cover-iphone-5-10Here?s the front of the iPhone 5 in the case. ?The edges of the back shell wrap over the champhered edges of the phone?s metal sides, but they don?t interfere with using the touch screen. ?You can see the Home button, phone ear piece, front camera, and the proximity/ambient-light sensor are all left completely open.

After a couple of weeks, I removed my Striped cover because I had another Vaja phone case to review, and I do miss my Striped cover. ?Butch has refused to give up his Executive Leather case. ?He?s still using it daily. ?He likes the protective suede pouch because he carries his phone in his front pocket. ?I have noticed a bit of leather darkening around the edges where he holds the phone, probably from skin oils. ?He says he doesn?t mind this darkening. ?In fact he likes the wearing-in, aging look of the leather. ?His case had no scratches because he always kept it in the suede pouch. ?My striped case looked the same when I took it off as when I put it on my iPhone. ?I think the shinier finish protected it from skin oils. ?I also always kept it in the suede pouch, and my case had no scratches.

I find these Vaja cases to be very protective. ?I certainly don?t have to worry that my keys or a pen will gouge my iPhone, because it?s almost completely covered by the case itself, and the suede pouch takes care of everything else. ?I was surprised to find how easy to use the phone was, because I expected that dangling front flap to be a problem while talking on the phone, but it wasn?t. ?The price is in line with a lot of other leather cases on the market ? and not all of those are hand-crafted, either. ?Vaja Cases have a variety of standard colors in both styles, but you can always have your case customized if they don?t have what you like. ?I find this to be a very good value for the money.

?

Markets drift lower amid mixed signals

LONDON (AP) ? Markets drifted lower Thursday amid mixed economic and corporate news around the world and as investors paused for thought following Wall Street's failure to make new highs.

Not even an upbeat German business survey or news that the British economy has picked up steam could alter the prevailing selling mood, which has seen many European and Asian indexes post 1 percent declines.

"It might be unfair to blame the current negativity on Wall Street, but the longer U.S. markets dithered ahead of new highs, the greater the likelihood that the bears would take the chance to push major indices lower," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was down 0.5 percent at 6,587 even after official figures showed the U.K. economy grew by a quarterly 0.6 percent in the second quarter of the year, its fastest rate in nearly two years. Germany's DAX was down 0.9 percent to 8,298 despite the closely watched Ifo index pointing to solid growth in Europe's economy. The CAC-40 in France was 0.2 percent lower at 3,956.

In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was down 0.47 percent at 15,470 while the broader S&P 500 index fell 0.3 percent to 1,681.

U.S. economic figures failed to lift the mood at the bell, with a bigger-than-expected 4.2 percent surge in durable goods orders in June downplayed because it was largely due to elevated aircraft sales. Meanwhile, a 7,000 increase in weekly U.S. jobless claims was more or less in line with expectations.

The latest run of corporate earnings around the world also failed to excite. Though a number of companies like Facebook have impressed, investors have not shown much willingness to push markets higher on the back of corporate earnings. Among the latest releases, Facebook and General Motors impressed but German chemical company BASF disappointed.

"It looks to me like some results ... are being used as an opportunity to sell at the current highs, creating another opportunity to buy the dips," said Craig Erlam, market analyst at Alpari.

Earlier in Asia, China's weak manufacturing figures from Wednesday continued to weigh on sentiment. China's slowdown is in large part self-induced. Its leaders are trying to shift the basis of China's growth away from reliance on exports and industrial investment in favor of consumption which they hope will be more self-sustaining. That means large stimulus is unlikely.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average shed 1.1 percent to 14,562.93 with camera-maker Canon plunging 5.4 percent after it lowered its full-year profit and sales outlook Wednesday. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was off 0.3 percent to 21,900.96 and China's Shanghai Composite dropped 0.6 percent to 2,021.17.

Currency markets were fairly lackluster with the euro 0.3 percent higher at $1.3226 and the dollar 0.7 percent down at 99.60 yen.

The latest bout of selling of oil ground to a halt and the benchmark New York rate was 36 cents lower at $105.04 a barrel.

Amazon's Kindle Singles will include interviews with 'iconic figures'

Amazon's Kindle Singles will feature interviews with some of the world's biggest names as part of their Kindle Singles store.

By Molly Driscoll,?Staff Writer / July 25, 2013

Shimon Peres, president of Israel, is the subject of the first Kindle Singles interview.

And now the company is using the Singles format to create the Kindle Singles Interview. Amazon users will be able to purchase interviews with ?iconic figures and world leaders,? according to the company.

The first Kindle Singles Interview, which is available now, features a discussion with president of Israel Shimon Peres. The interviewer was author David Samuels for Tablet Magazine, a publication which focuses on Jewish topics of the day and news.

In a statement, Kindle Singles editor David Blum looked back to 1962 when ?Roots? writer Alex Haley interviewed Miles Davis and made Playboy magazine a destination for interesting Q&As as well as establishing the idea of the importance of lengthy interviews with the day?s major figures.

?We hope to carry forward that tradition, and use the unlimited digital space to engage great artists and thinkers in conversation with skilled writers and interviewers,? Blum said of Kindle Singles Interviews.

Like other Kindle Singles, the interviews will be available for purchase for 99 cents. Only Kindle customers can purchase the Singles.

The increase in capital expenditures reflects additional investments in support of continued business growth consisting of investments in technology, infrastructure including Amazon Web Services and additional capacity to support our fulfillment operations.

Return on invested capital was 2%, down from 11%. ROIC is TTM free cash flow divided by average total assets minus current liabilities excluding the current portion of long-term debt over five quarter ends. The combination of common stock and stock-based awards outstanding was 474 million shares compared with 468 million shares.

Worldwide revenue grew 22% to $15.7 billion or 25% excluding the $392 million unfavorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rate. We are grateful to our customers who continue to take advantage of our low prices, vast selection and shipping offers.

Media revenue increased to $4.4 billion, up 7% or 11% excluding foreign exchange. EGM revenue increased to $10.42 billion, up 28% or 30% excluding foreign exchange. Worldwide EGM increased to 66% of worldwide sales, up from 64%.Worldwide paid unit growth was 29%. Active customer accounts exceeded 215 million. Worldwide active seller accounts were more than 2 million. Seller units represented 40% of paid units.

Now I will discuss operating expenses, excluding stock-based compensation. Cost of sales was $11.21 billion, or 71.4% of revenue, compared with 73.9%. Fulfillment, marketing, tech and content and G&A combined was $4.09 billion, or 26% of sales, up approximately 275 basis points year-over-year. Fulfillment was $1.76 billion, or 11.2% of revenue compared with 10.1%. Tech and content was $1.43 billion, or 9.1% of revenue, compared with 7.6%. Marketing was $651 million, or 4.1% of revenue consistent with prior period.

Now, let?s talk about our segment results and consistent with prior periods, we do not allocate the segments, our stock-based compensation or other operating expense line item.

In the North America segment, revenue grew 30% to $9.49 billion. Media revenue grew 16% to $2.17 billion. EGM revenue grew 31% to $6.48 billion, representing 68% of North America revenues, up from 67%. North America segment operating income increased 19% to $409 million, a 4.3% operating margin.

In the international segment, revenue grew 13% to $6.21 billion. Adjusting for the $391 million year-over-year unfavorable foreign exchange impact, revenue growth was 20%. Media revenue decreased 1% to $2.22 billion, or grew 7% excluding foreign exchange, and EGM revenue grew 22% to $3.94 billion, or 29% excluding foreign exchange. EGM now represents 63% of international revenues, up from 59%.

International segment operating income was zero, down from $16 million in the prior-year period. Excluding the unfavorable impact from foreign exchange, international segment operating income increased to 11%.

CSOI increased 14% to $409 million, or 2.6% of revenue, down approximately 20 basis points year-over-year. Excluding the unfavorable impact from foreign exchange, CSOI increased 19%. Unlike CSOI, our GAAP operating income includes stock-based compensation expense and other operating expense.

GAAP operating income decreased 26% to $79 million, or 0.5% of net sales. Our income tax expense was $13 million. GAAP net loss was $7 million or $0.02 per diluted share compared with net income of $7 million and $0.01 per diluted share.

Turning to the balance sheet, cash and marketable securities increased $2.49 billion year-over-year to $7.46 billion. Inventory increased 24% to $5.42 billion and inventory turns were 9.4, down from 10.1 turns a year-ago as we expanded selection, improved in stock levels and introduced new product categories. Accounts payable increased 27% to $8.99 billion and accounts payable days increased to 73 from 68 in the prior-year.

I?ll conclude my portion of today?s call with guidance. Incorporated into our guidance are the order trends that we?ve seen to-date and what we believe today to be appropriately conservative assumptions. Our results are inherently unpredictable and may be materially affected by many factors, including a high-level of uncertainty surrounding exchange rate fluctuations as well as the global economy and consumer spending. It?s not possible to accurately predict demand and therefore our actual results could differ materially from our guidance. As we?ve described in more detail in our public filings issues such as settling intercompany balances in foreign currencies among such subsidiaries, unfavorable resolution of legal matters and changes to our effective tax rates can all have a material effect on guidance.

Our guidance further assumes that we don't conclude any additional business acquisitions, investments, restructurings or legal settlements, record any further revisions to stock-based compensation estimates and that foreign exchange rates remain approximately where they have been recently.

For Q3, 2013 we expect net sales of between $15.45 billion and $17.15 billion, a growth between 12% and 24%. This guidance anticipates approximately 300 basis points of unfavorable impact from foreign exchange rates. GAAP operating loss to be between $440 million and $65 million compared to $28 million in the third quarter of 2012. This includes approximately $340 million of stock-based compensation and amortization of intangible assets.

We anticipate consolidated segment operating income or loss, which excludes stock-based compensation and other operating expense to be between $100 million loss and $275 million in income compared to $232 million of income in third quarter 2012. We remain heads down focused on driving a better customer experience through price, selection, and convenience. We believe putting customers first is the only reliable way to create lasting value for shareholders.

Thanks. And with that, Sean, let?s move to questions.

While these numbers are astonishing, the numbers are most likely even higher for mobile users, assuming users have mobile protection to begin with. The same types of exploitation for computers exists for mobile devices, but with even more opportunities, such as downloading and installing apps from places that are neither trusted nor verified sources. Furthermore, in some instances, developers of apps that are being given for free can also have backdoor access to mobile devices. That is, the app has been programmed to crawl, search, and locate personal information of the user, and send it back to the developer.

Mobile banking has been available in India for several years now, but is still not fully utilized as it could be for bank customers. There is the fear and perception that their bank accounts could be compromised and hacking, thus leaving their balances at zero. Unfortunately, this scenario does occur in India, and almost always has the involvement of a shady and crooked bank official. However, in all fairness, banks do send both e-mail and SMS alerts for any and all transactions, including both online and mobile banking.

Internet users in India simply need to be more alert and vigilant when online, and pay attention to any and all abnormal activities online. However, it does become challenging to determine what is considered suspicious, behind the scenes activity when users aren't aware of what to look for. If anything, simple precautions such as not selecting features to keep a user logged in, or even opening an attachment without a virus scan first, can help prevent some attacks.

In the worst case scenario, if a user ends up at site where the homepage clearly states malicious software detected, they should not proceed further, and proceed back instead. That being said, it's ironic how so many users still don't follow these simple precautions, especially the last one, and end up with paying the consequences in the end.
