Streaming Storage: SanDisk Connect Wireless Drives

Just when we thought there were no new ideas to be had in the data storage space, SanDisk today introduced two interesting new takes on the portable hard drive.

The first, and most interesting, is the SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive ($50 for 16 GB; $60 for 32 GB). This little gadget is both a USB thumb drive and a wirelessly accessible hard drive. It works like this: You plug the drive into the USB port of your computer, and as you upload documents, photos, music, movies, or what have you, the device's internal battery charges via the USB as well. Then unplug it, push the little wireless button, and the SanDisk spawns a small Wi-Fi network that lets up to eight devices see the content, and up to three devices can stream video from it at once. This process works in reverse as well: Take photos with your smartphone or tablet, send them wirelessly to the SanDisk stick, then plug it into the side of your computer for far easier file transfer than you can get through the clunky iTunes interface. Not only can this device spawn its own network, it can also join into an existing one, allowing data to stream from it to other devices on the network without disrupting Internet connectivity.

The best part is that the memory isn't even built in to the device?it's really just a card reader for micro SD storage, which means that you can swap out cards or expand the memory as you wish.

The second device, and the more capable big brother of the Connect Wireless Flash Drive, is the SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive ($80 for 32 GB; $100 for 64 GB). This one is a little larger and more expensive, and requires a cable to hook up to computer USB ports. But it can stream video to five devices at once and has both onboard memory and an expansion slot for full-size SD cards. Because these devices use the SDXC standard, a user could conceivably add a 256 GB card to the onboard 64 GB memory for a total of 320 GB of flash memory onboard (though the only 256 GB SD card currently on the market costs more than $500, making that solution financially impractical).

These devices are flexible and far smaller than most wireless hard drives, and the price is pretty nice, too. We do have a few quibbles: One, these SanDisk devices don't seem to be DLNA compliant?that means no streaming to Xboxes and PS3s for now. Also, for some reason SanDisk created two separate mobile apps for the devices. Both apps are available on iOS and Android, but the interfaces are inexplicably different for the Wireless Flash Drive and the Wireless Media Drive. Rather than one unified platform for moving media on and off your mobile devices, SanDisk has created two different platforms.

These are problems that can (presumably) be fixed with software and firmware updates. For now, these little drives are awesome just the way they are.
